Duties

Help

Functions as an Industrial Specialist in the research and development section of the vehicular up-fit factory. Analyzes project requests and determines the scope of proposals to ensure the needs of the customer are addressed.

Prepares design sketches (utilizing CAD), cost estimates, detailed job plans, and material requirements involved in the up-fitting of new vehicles. Vehicles must be in compliance with state and federal laws.

Responsible for the establishment of new product packages, the expansion and improvement of current up-fitting packages, and improvement of re-manufacturing processes throughout the Fleet Management and Vehicular Components Business Group.

Develops and maintains programs on a continuing basis to assure satisfactory completion of all projects and ongoing projects related to their area of responsibility.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff's correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements.

Basic Requirements:

Education:

Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- business administration, industrial management, engineering, applied sciences, or other fields related to the position.

OR

Experience:

Specialized Experience (for positions above GS-5): Experience that demonstrated a practical knowledge of the methods, materials, machinery, and facilities used in industrial production operations (which may include exploration, extraction, refining, manufacturing, or processing). This knowledge may have been gained in work such as:

  • Management or supervision of production operations.
  • Industrial planning, industrial engineering, or plant engineering, involving determination of facilities and layout.
  • Process or methods development involving production practices associated with chemical, mechanical, electronic, textile, or food industries.
  • Development of specifications to define product requirements.
  • Sales engineering or buying that required a comprehensive knowledge of production operations.
  • Planning and administering industrial quality control and inspection systems and programs.
  • Comprehensive survey and analysis of industrial operations, organization, capacity, etc.
  • Interpreting and applying contract clauses and government acquisition regulations.
  • Development of plans to determine material requirements and/or schedules for production management.

AND

In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must have:

Education:

Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.M., if related.

Graduate Education: Major study - - business administration, industrial management, engineering, applied sciences, or other fields related to the position.

OR

Experience:

You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are:

  • Experience identifying customer needs and preparing accurate designs within established safety parameters as well as estimates for cost, materials, and time frames to complete vehicle modifications.
  • Experience communicating with vendors to determine cost and availability of parts and making recommendations for changes based on supply issues.
  • Experience comparing drawings and plans with the physical outcome and verifying it meets safety and legal requirements.
  • Experience using tools involved in vehicular component repair such as welding equipment, bench grinders, and drill presses.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience:

You may have a combination of successfully completed higher education and experience. This experience must have equipped you with the particular qualifications to perform the major duties of this position as described above.

If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.

In accordance with 5 U.S.C. 3307, a maximum entry age of 36 has been established for initial appointment to a position in a Bureau of Prisons institution. If you are above the maximum entry age and have prior federal law enforcement coverage, you MUST submit an SF-50 to verify prior coverage.

Special Conditions of Employment Section:

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a pre-employment and panel interview, urinalysis, physical, and background investigation.

All applicants are subject to, and must satisfactorily pass all screening requirements in relation to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit check.

All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.

The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score of 68 must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.

Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques", three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required. 

Additional selections may be made if vacancies occur within the life of the certificate.
