Summary

This position is located in the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department of Commander, Navy Region Southwest (CNRSW). The primary purpose of this position is to assist with the repair and construction of facilities belonging to the Morale, Welfare and Recreation Department.

Duties

Help

  1. Assist with updating facility by, painting, refinishing, carpeting and repairing walls, ceilings, furniture, and floors, both wooden or tile. Measures, cuts and assembles material using nails, staples, dowel pins and glue. Measures, cuts and constructs walls, cabinets, doors, windows, etc., using hand tools and power tools on wood or wood substitutes. Replaces glass, locks, doors, windows, etc., by cutting, sawing, drilling, fitting and sealing.
  2. Assists with the repairs to structure, foundation, plumbing, and sprinkler system by removing, replacing, plastering, paneling, cleaning, unclogging, packing, and/or sealing defective parts.
  3. Prepares surfaces for applying coating materials by smoothing, sanding, filling, and applying pre-coating agents. Assures coating finishes are free from drips and runs, meet, match texture and surface thickness. Uses pre-mixed paint and accomplish assignments by using roller, brushes and spray equipment. Cleans and maintains brushes and painting equipment.
  4. Assist in making minor plumbing repairs that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, replacing, packing, and sealing. Uses such tools and equipment as tapes, rules, hacksaws, hand and power pipe threaders and cutters, packing and caulking irons and pipe wrenches. Assist plumber in repairs as needed.
  5. Operates a motor vehicle in getting to and from assignments. Checks vehicle for proper maintenance/safety checks, such as gas and oil, required oil change and brakes be in proper order, etc. Secures vehicle in designated area at the end of day.
  6. Digs shallow holes or trenches to support post and other structures, using hand tools. Mixes and lays concrete as needed.
  7. Performs preventive maintenance of shop tools and equipment. Cleans all work areas and other assigned areas

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background Investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of various maintenance procedures relating to the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures and utilities

Incumbent must be able to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.

Have ability to use hand tools such as hammers, saws, wrenches, etc.

Capable of learning to use power tools, such as skill saws, table saws, power drills etc., in a safe effective way.

Capable of mixing stains, paints and other coatings according to written and oral directions, being able to recognize the proper appearance and consistency.

Knowledge and skilled in applying coating and paints using various brushes, sprays and tools, to produce the desired finish or texture.

Be familiar with solvents, thinners, and cleaners to remove coatings and paints from brushes, tools and materials.

Possess a California driver's license to qualify for a government driver's license
