Summary

Environmental Management Services (EMS) provides housekeeping, textile and uniform services to all buildings within the Aleda E. Lutz, VAMC, Saginaw campus and associated clinics that require the use of linen. The Laundry Worker reports directly to the Housekeeping Work Supervisor or Chief, EMS, ensuring assigned areas are cleaned efficiently and effectively.

Help

Duties include but not limited to:
Uniform/Patient Clothing/Scrub Processing: 50%

  • Checking patient linen and uniforms for foreign items, removing all foreign items.
  • Checking employee uniforms for stains, and for possible Fair, Wear and Tear (FWT)
  • Identifies statins and uses proper chemicals for stain removal
  • Loads and unloads linen in small washer depending on size of loads
  • Assembles linen on racks or laundry carts in proper sequence and pushes rack/cart for delivery to units
Par Levels/Record Keeping/Uniform Issue: 30%
  • Issues all uniforms for Medical Center personnel
  • Maintain adequate uniform/scrub par level to assure all customer needs are met
  • Receives uniform/scrub shipments in warehouse, checking invoices for accuracy.
Housekeeping Duties: 20%
  • dusting, wet and dry mopping, wet and dry cleaning, bed cleaning, detail cleaning, cleaning of light fixtures, vents, and sprinkler heads, collection and transportation of waste and soiled linen, polishing, cleaning of lavatories, commodes and urinals, and replenishing paper goods and soap
  • clean the bed units; to include wall washing, movement of furniture, changing of cubicle curtains and linen, as well as isolation room cleaning techniques

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
The incumbent's duties require moderate to heavy lifting of up to 50 lbs.; continuous standing, bending, and stooping; walking; crawling; kneeling; use of ladders; climbing of stairs; straight pushing and pulling; reaching above shoulder; and use of fingers. The incumbent must have sufficient visual ability to see basic colors, dust, dirt, and cobwebs.

The Laundry Worker performs their duties in all areas of the hospital and outbuildings. The incumbent frequently rotates assigned areas and may be directed to change cleaning areas without notice from their supervisor. The Laundry Worker usually works in well-lighted and well-ventilated areas under generally favorable working conditions. The incumbent must be alert to safety hazards and observe and follow safe practices and procedures when using chemical solutions, contaminated materials, and sharp objects. The Laundry Worker may have exposure to outside and inside excessive heat, cold, humidity and excessive dampness and chilling, intermittent noise, dust, fumes, smoke and gases; slippery and uneven walking surfaces; working around machinery with moving parts; working moving objects and vehicles; working on ladders or scaffolding; work alone and closely with others. The incumbent may have brief exposure to inclement weather.

The Laundry Worker uses potentially dangerous equipment and chemicals while performing daily tasks. The incumbent must be aware of their surroundings, perform duties in a safe manner and acknowledge and adjust planned duties, if necessary, in the presence of Veterans, Staff and Visitors.
