Duties

Help

The Motor Vehicle Operator is responsible for the operation, of gasoline, diesel, and electric powered wheeled vehicles to haul cargo and fuel, transport passengers, or to tow or recover equipment.

In this position, you will:

  • Operate passenger buses with a capacity of more than 20 passengers.
  • Operate vehicles on roads and streets through all kinds of traffic and over rough terrain.
  • Operate various types of motor vehicles, ranging from buses of considerable size to different types of large and heavy trucks with trailer or semi-trailer.
  • Select the most appropriate routes to follow to ensure safe and timely arrival at assigned destinations.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods.

Additional Conditions of Employment

  • At a minimum, candidate must have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with P (Passenger) Endorsement. (Candidate must submit a photocopy of CDL License, front and rear)
  • Candidate must pass a pre-screening Drug Testing.
  • Candidate must meet medical requirements.
  • Candidate must register with Clearinghouse Register | Before You Register (dot.gov)
  • Candidate must have and maintain a clean driving record, to include no major or serious violations as defined by the respective state.
  • Candidate must wear employer-issued clothing as designated.
  • Candidate may be required to work late shifts, weekends and holidays and is subject to being called in for emergencies to restore the Smithsonian Institution to normal operations.
  • Occasional travel is required.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
