Duties

Help
  • Works with the public to provide information and be the primary point of contact at BLM contact stations/visitor centers.
  • Advises visitors concerning safety, amenities available, and proper and authorized uses of recreational facilities.
  • Posts daily weather, flash flood, and road conditions for the safety of visitors; closing areas when conditions warrant.
  • Meets with visitors to provide information concerning points of interest, travel routes, historical and natural features, site use opportunities and limitations, and park activities.
  • Observes, monitors, and evaluates onsite programs to determine if visitor needs are met; determines and recommends activities that community organizations could undertake to increase program effectiveness.
  • Identifies visitor needs for specific programs and services through surveys, questionnaires, and group discussions.
  • Develops interpretive programs, conducting independent research of topics using sources such as records, books, files, and, where appropriate, interviews with people who have personal knowledge of a particular site or event.
  • Presents a variety of formal and interpretive programs to include but not limited to, orientation talks, environmental education programs, conducted walks, demonstrations, and campfire programs.
  • Develops interpretive materials such as pamphlets, exhibits, signs, guidebooks, and handouts.
  • Recruits and trains candidates for volunteer programs, develops work projects, and coordinates activities with other park personnel.
  • Oversees fee collection activities, maintaining records on and accounting for funds, and submitting deposits.
  • Responds to customer service inquiries.

TO QUALIFY FOR THE GS-07 GRADE LEVEL, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:

1) EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to at least the GS-05 level or pay band in the Federal service). Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, interpretation, education, recreation management, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include the following: - Park guide or tour leader. - Education Specialist or Interpretive Park Ranger. - Recreation or business management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area. - Management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, education or management of park areas or similar operations.

2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION:
One full academic year of graduate education (18 semester hours/27 quarter hours) with major study in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Course work in fields other than those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position of Park Ranger duties.

3) COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
: You may meet the qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12 month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying graduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of one year of graduate study leading to a master's degree. The total of the two percentages must equal at least 100 percent.

4) Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) with a bachelor's degree: S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled based on the courses listed above for Education.S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.

  1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
  2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
    1. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
    2. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.

3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society -- Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies listed at this link: Association of College Honor Societies (external link). Agencies considering eligibility based on any society not included in the following list must ensure that the honor society meets the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands / Work Environment: Positions require physical exertions, such as, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Individuals should be capable of working alone, or with other people, during early morning hours, night, or during the day.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
