Summary

The Electrician, WG-2805-10, will be assigned to the Maintenance and Repair section at the Northern California Health Care System site in Martinez, CA, however, the position also entails traveling to other VANCHCS sites supporting our Outpatient Clinics at Mare Island, Oakland and Fairfield. The incumbent performs the duties of a journeyman electrician under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; Tour of duty subject to change to meet the needs of the AgencyPosition Description Title/PD#: Electrician/PD08096A

Electricians work from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering, drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls. Incumbents will utilize safety and security practices to maintain a safe, clean and healthy work environment. Other duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Install, modify, repair and maintain new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment.
  • Interpret and apply the National Electrical Code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings.
  • Use trade formulas to calculate common properties, such as voltage, voltage drop and current capability.
  • Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings, and connections and install wiring, couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices.
  • Use hand tools and power tools, such as cable pullers, hydraulic benders, pipe threading machines and testing devices.
  • Diagnose problems and determine needed repairs or replacements.
  • Arrange and install materials in order to ensure proper and safe operation of systems, circuits, and equipment utilized.
  • Troubleshoot, test, and load new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment.
  • Make regular and periodic inspections of electrical systems and equipment compliance.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and other hard­ to reach places. This requires standing, stepping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries tools, equipment, and parts weighing up to 20 pounds and less often, up to 40 pounds. Occasionally, they lift or move, with assistance, moderately heavy objects weighing more than 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. There are jobs that may require an electrician to make repairs and installations in bad weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy, on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 or more feet; and in close quarters such as manholes, ceilings or under buildings. Occasionally this position may be exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burn, and the possibility of cuts and bruises.
