Summary

Hemodialysis Technicians operate and monitor all aspects of the hemodialysis treatment, to include assembly of equipment, preparation of dialysis machine, cannulation of access or appropriate use of central venous catheter, assessment of the patient during dialysis treatment including monitoring of vital signs, documentation of vital signs, administration of medications approved for use in dialysis treatments.

Help

Major duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment checks and conductivity.
  • Supports diagnostic procedures and assists with technical nursing treatments.
  • Performs standardized treatment procedures requiring considerable training such as arterio-venous fistula and graft care.
  • Obtains and record vital signs; pulse, temperature, respirations, blood pressure, and pain score.
  • Assists patients with activities of daily living (e.g., hygiene, eating, dressing and ambulation) including oral/denture care, perineal care, and foot care.
  • Empties Foley catheters, urinals, surgical drains, and record output amounts.
  • Stocks and prepares required equipment and devices for the kidney biopsy cart and assists nursing and renal providers, as directed, with renal related biopsies.
  • Tests, calibrates, utilizes, maintains and troubleshoots test instruments and devices used for dialysis.
  • Maintains spare technical specialty equipment by performing daily rinse, checks, & disinfection.
  • Tests, utilizes, documents & troubleshoots HD water system.
  • Performs and documents critical functional and safety tests of equipment.
  • Routinely stocks and reorders critical supplies.
  • Inventories unit-specific patient care supplies and technical equipment, instruments, devices for expiration dates.
  • Sets up, uses, reprocesses, and maintains all unit/department-specific equipment that is designed by the manufacturer to be reused for multiple patients.
  • Encourages and supports patients and families to participate in care and decision-making at the level they choose.
  • Actively protects patient privacy and healthcare information from unauthorized release, loss, alteration or deletion.
  • Participates in significant professional activities including trainings, audio-conferences, other specialty specific healthcare courses, and/or biomedical/technical courses to improve patient safety.
Work Schedule: 10 hour shifts, Monday - Saturday. May include weekends and holidays.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • Licensure or Certification. Licensure or Certification is not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations: GS-08
Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of the more complex procedures, the pharmacology related to this occupation, and knowledge of related acute disorders and diseases and their effects on organs and methods of treatment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Knowledge of the hemodialysis process and equipment needed for home/self care including knowledge of common machine problems and repairs to such equipment.
2. Knowledge of the equipment and procedures for peritoneal dialysis.
3. Ability to assist the physician with percutaneous renal biopsies and peritoneal catheter insertion.
4. Ability to provide instruction to dialysis patients in home/self care and in the maintenance of the equipment.
5. Ability to provide instruction for physicians, nurses, and other personnel in dialysis procedures, equipment operation and maintenance, etc.

Certification. No certification is required; however, it is desirable that employees at this level have BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications.

Preferred Experience: Hemodialysis technician with equal to or greater than 2 years experience and certified in dialysis.

Reference: A Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G27, Medical Instrument Technician Qualification Standard, GS-649.The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08.
