Summary

This position is part of the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute (SIPI), Bureau of Indian Education (BIE), Department of the Interior (DOI). Duties

Help

As a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor, WS-4749-9, your typical work assignments will include the following:

  • Supervise and train subordinate workers in various trades and crafts equipment, facilities, and materials in an organizational segment or group.
  • Plan on a weekly or monthly basis the use of subordinate workers including evaluating, training and assigning work in various phases associated with the construction, repair, maintenance, and renovation of buildings and related structures, grounds, fixtures and utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices.
  • Establish and maintain a preventive maintenance program for the college campus, anticipating maintenance and repair needs far enough in advance to procure supplies to assure orderly workflow.
  • Recommend performance ratings, training, disciplinary actions, approves/denies leaves, and recommends employees for promotions and reassignments.
  • Ensure education in, compliance with, and practice of safety procedures, OSHA requirements, and environmental issues in all work areas.
  • Facilitate, implement, and administer construction and service contracts as contracting officer representative for all campus buildings and equipment as assigned.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what the applicant can do against what the work calls for. The knowledge, skills, and abilities of applicants are compared with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. If applicants have the ability to do the work, they are considered eligible for the job. Maintenance Worker Supervisors must be able to lead other workers or supervise subordinates, to deal objectively and harmoniously with others, and to render sound decisions. This position involves working independently in a wide range of maintenance activities, ensure maintenance and/or facility operations are carried out in accordance with appropriate policies and procedures and supervising maintenance department employees.

This position does not have a positive education requirement at this grade level. Therefore, no transcripts are required.

Additional information

Position Information: Incumbent will be expected to complete a license and exam preparation course and pass exam to obtain a state of New Mexico certificate/licensure as a commercial general contractor (GB-98), Mechanical Contractor (MM-98), or Electrical Journeyman (EE98J).

Driving Requirement (required only at time of appointment): Incumbent may be required, as an incidental duty, to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle, in the performance of duties, therefore, a valid driver's license is required. Incumbent must have a safe driving record within the three-year period immediately preceding submittal of GSA Form 3607 and be able to meet the safe driving requirements of the Bureau of Indian Education.
