Summary

This position is located within the Electrical Unit of Engineering/Service Line and reports directly to the Electric Shop Supervisor. The primary purpose of this position is to install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair a variety of electrical wiring systems, fixtures, and equipment for the Finger Lakes VAMC. The Electrical Worker provides assistance to other areas of the Electric Unit such as the Machine Shop, Laundry Shop, and Wheelchair Shop when assistance is required.

Duties

Help

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Cutting, threading, and bending conduit, pull wires through conduit, running conduit, running and laying cable.
  • Splicing wire and cable by removing insulation from conductors, scraping conductor clean with knife or scraping tools, cutting with pliers, twisting conductor together, soldering or using mechanical means to make splices.
  • Applying tape to complete splice or applying wire connectors to make connection to fixtures, outlets and switches and fastening fixtures in place.
  • Installing flush plates over switches and outlets, connecting complete electrical circuits to the power source, helping to install high and low voltage lines, street lighting systems and interior wiring.
  • Replaces worn or bad switches, relays, and outlets.
  • Installs or rearranges light fixtures, switches, and outlets by following schematic drawings.
  • Involves maintenance and repair of electrical systems, components and fixtures throughout the facility.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/23/2025.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Troubleshooting (Electrical)
  • Use and Maintain Hand Tools (Electrical Work)
  • Without more than normal supervision


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent works both inside buildings of various types and outdoors and subject to varying work conditions, which may include tight and confined spaces and heights of 10 feet or more. The incumbent maybe required to work in all types of hazardous weather conditions, rain, sleet, snow, wind including hot and freezing temperatures. The incumbent is exposed to dust, dirt, odors, fumes, loud noise, and will be required to work primarily in a medical center and can be subjected to various types of diseases and infections. The incumbent maybe required to perform duties in a research facility, or off his/her normal station, at remote medical clinics. The incumbent must be able to do the work of the position without harm to himself/herself or others. The incumbent must be aware of safety hazards and follow all established safety procedures. The incumbent is subject to overtime and emergency callbacks, as the needs of the facility demand. The incumbent maybe required to drive a motor vehicle in connection with the performance of assigned duties.

Additional information

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
