Duties

Help

As a Supervisory Security Guard, GS-0085-9, your typical work assignments will include the following:

  • Manage and administer the Security and Safety Programs for the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute.
  • Provide first line supervision to security guards including setting priorities, assigning tasks and responsibilities, monitoring and evaluating performance, coaching and developing employee capabilities and approving leave.
  • Patrol and monitor federal buildings and grounds to safeguard students, employees and visitors from harm, damage or danger and protect campus property and equipment against sabotage, theft, damage, vandalism, trespassing and disturbances.
  • Serve as the primary Security Office contact providing assistance to the general public, employees, students, local law enforcement agencies and emergency response personnel.
  • Responsible for ensuring all required training and certifications for the Security and Safety Programs is maintained within established guidelines.
  • Minimize adverse effects on the safety and occupational health of employees by identifying and eliminating unsafe and unhealthful conditions.
  • Advise management in the development and implementation of an effective safety and occupational health program including emergency preparedness plans.

  • A background security investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Appointment to this is subject to a 2-year trial or 1-year probationary period unless the requirement has already been met.
  • Appointment may be subject to a 1-year supervisory probationary period unless the requirement has already been met.

  • Incidental Operator position. If you are required to operate a motor vehicle in order to properly carry out assigned duties, the 25 1AM 4 Motor Vehicle Safety Program Policy applies.
  • This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) that requires pre-employment drug testing and is subject to random testing thereafter.

Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirements: Applicants must meet the qualification requirements contained in the OPM Standards. For this position, they are listed below and can be found here: OPM Operating Manual, General Qualification Standards for Security Guard Series, GS-0085.

Medical Requirements: The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.

Applicants and employees must have the capacity to perform the essential functions of the position without risk to themselves or others. In most instances, a specific medical condition or impairment will not automatically disqualify an applicant or employee. A medical condition or impairment is disqualifying only if the condition, for good medical reason, precludes assignment to or warrants restriction from the duties of the specific position. In addition to meeting the Individual Occupational Requirement, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications requirements below.

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

GS-9 Grade Level: 1 year of specialized experience related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service. Examples include experience such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved managing and administering security and safety programs involving the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques and progressive responsibility for training subordinate or new security staff. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis.

Only experience obtained by the closing date of this announcement will be considered.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year (52 weeks) of service at the next lower grade level.

Education

This position does not have a positive education requirement at this grade level. Therefore, no transcripts are required.

Note: Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment.

The pay flexibilities of a recruitment incentive or relocation incentive may be authorized, pending availability of funds and management approval.

Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP)/Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) Documentation. Driving Requirement (required only at time of appointment): Incumbent may be required, as an incidental duty, to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle, in the performance of duties, therefore, a valid driver's license is required. Incumbent must have a safe driving record within the three-year period immediately preceding submittal of GSA Form 3607 and be able to meet the safe driving requirements of the Bureau of Indian Education.
