Duties

Help

As a Helicopter Flight Instructor/Evaluator/Maintenance Test Pilot, GS-2181-13, you will perform preflight weather analysis, route and altitude selections, alternate airport selection, fuel, cargo and passenger load computations, selection of refueling stops, preflight inspections, flight plan filing, routine maintenance test flights, and firing ranges route planning/coordination. Serve as rotary wing Unit Trainer/Evaluator (UT/E) or Instructor Pilot (IP): Trains and evaluates aviators on basic, advanced and maintenance test flight techniques. Serve as rotary wing Instrument Flight Examiner (IE): Conduct instrument flight qualifications and training which includes, instrument flight planning, precision handling and maneuvering of the aircraft, navigation using the aircraft navigation instruments and systems, air traffic control operations, approach, departure, and holding procedures, and use of the ILS. Serve as rotary wing Standardization Instructor Pilot (SIP): Train and evaluate I P's and provide technical supervision of the standardization program. Serve as Maintenance Test Pilot Examiner (ME)/Functional Check Pilot (FCP) Evaluator: Serve as rotary wing Maintenance Test Pilot Examiner/Function Check Pilot Evaluator. Serve as an Aviation Safety Officer (ASO) carrying out a variety of duties to provide a productive aviation safety program for the Aviation Classification Repair Activity Depot (AVCRAD) or any Army Aviation Facility. Serve as rotary wing Maintenance Test Pilot (MTP) and/or Functional Check Pilot (FCP). Incumbent will perform general or limited maintenance test flights following maintenance modifications or repairs to include routine scheduled maintenance. Serve as Aviation Mission Survivability Officer: Serve as an Aviation Mission Survivability Officer (AMSO) Tactical Operations (TACOPS) Officer. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • This is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The employee is subject to random drug testing. Pre­employment drug testing and participation in random drug testing is a condition of employment.
  • Incumbent must possess and continue to maintain a US Army Class II Flight Physical.
  • The employee may be required to travel in military and/or commercial aircraft to perform temporary duty assignments.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.
  • Incumbent is subject to uncommon tours of duty, rotational shift assignments and compensation and/or overtime duty.
  • Employee will be required to wear and use personal protective equipment as required and provided by the employer.

Qualifications

Military Grades: CW2 through CW4

Qualified and current in UH60M/L/V models as a Maintenance Test Pilot and have completed the Aviation Maintenance Officer Course.


GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Competent understanding of the occupation's basic principles and concepts; have a minimum of one year on the-job experience in the grade (or a comparable military rank) immediately below the next higher level; possession of Federal Aviation Administration pilot certificates -OR- appropriate military certifications, military ratings in the main-frame military aircraft of employment, and the required competencies competent understanding of the occupation's basic principles and concepts; have a minimum of one year on-the-job experience in the grade (or a comparable military rank) immediately below the next higher level; possession of Federal Aviation Administration pilot certificates -OR- appropriate military certifications, military ratings in the mainframe military aircraft of employment, and the required competencies.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least one year in the next lower grade or at least 36 months specialized experience in operating a specific main-frame military aircraft, mission planning, and mission preparation. Experienced in reviewing and analyzing mission tasking, intelligence, and weather information. Experienced in filing flight plans and conducting crew briefings. Experienced in aircraft preflight inspections, aircraft loading, and equipment assessments. Experienced in performing or supervising work procedures involved in navigation, in-flight refueling, search and rescue operations or surveillance and reconnaissance. Competent in conducting or supervising the training of crew members in simple to complex mission specific tasks. Experienced in developing plans and policies, monitoring operations, and advising commanders. Knowledge is required in flight theory, air navigation, meteorology, flying directives, mission tactics, and operating procedures. Experienced in the unit flying, explosive, and ground safety programs in accordance with Department of Defense, Department of the Army, National Guard Bureau, and/or Occupational Safety and Health Administration policies, regulations, and directives.

Education

Education Requirement: Must have a high school diploma or general education development (GED) diploma. An undergraduate degree from an accredited college/university is optimum. Must have Federal Aviation Administration certifications awarded from accredited civilian aviation programs or must have aviation certifications from accredited military aviation schools.

Substitution of Education to qualify for this position is not available.
