Duties

Help
  • Prepare operating rooms for surgery and select, assemble, and organize required sterile supplies, equipment and instruments for surgical procedures.
  • Prepare patients in pre-op area and for transport.
  • Obtain supplies needed during surgery such as blood, drugs, solutions, instruments and additional sterile supplies.
  • Prepare and deliver specimens for laboratory while documenting information in intraoperative nursing record.
  • Provide technical oversight of surgical health technicians assigned to the cardiothoracic surgery service, which includes selection, training and skill sustainment.
  • Develop education and training program to ensure the provision of high-quality surgical technicians for this service.
  • Coordinate with MTP supply services personnel to resolve or troubleshoot issues which impact surgical services of the department.
  • Collaborate with service administrator and resource management to maintain the supply budget for the service.
  • Must assist with clinical care.
  • Assisting surgeons with surgical procedures.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 1 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated “Mission Essential”. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing assistance to surgeon in operation procedures such as passing instruments, monitoring fluid loss, etc.; preparing patients and operating rooms for surgical procedures; Monitor and assist with ordering supplies ; identifying, cleaning and sterilizing a variety of surgical instruments and equipment; and administering various dressings and positioning patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Licensed Surgical Technologist preferred
