Duties

Help

   The incumbent: 

  • Serves as Gallery driver with responsibility to transport NGA staff and visitors, supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Ensures the comfort and safety of NGA employees, materials and equipment to and from their destination throughout the Washington Metropolitan Area.
  • Serves as driver for the Director's Office with responsibility for transporting the Trustees, Director and Executive Officers on official NGA business.
  • Serves as courier for the Gallery including the Director's Office in the delivery of written confidential and/or urgent material.
  • Operates Class IV sedans and 7 to 15 passengers vans with gross vehicle weight up to 12,499 pounds, and pick-up utility trucks and commercial cargo vans with a gross vehicle weight up to 8,499 pounds.
  • Operates vehicles over Federal, State, County and City roads, highways, and streets; and at posted speeds through congested areas daily. Selects appropriate routes and obeys all traffic laws, rules and safety regulations.
  • Receives assignments from the Lead Support Services Specialist (Transportation), the Director's Office, and APPL Supervisor on the type of vehicle to use, destination, cargo or passengers to be transported, purpose of the trip, deadlines to be met and any special information necessary to complete the assignment.
  • Operates and maneuvers electric pallet jacks, electric and manual forklifts, cherry pickers, reach lifts, hand trucks, hydraulic dollies, flat bed trucks, J-Bars, dollies, carts and various other material handling equipment to pickup and deliver material and supplies throughout the NGA warehouse as necessary.
  • Determines the cargo loading methods and sequence to achieve load balance and adequate protection of fragile property. Protects property from the weather.
  • Distributes and secures property to prevent loss or damage during transport. Secures property with tie-down straps or tarpaulin to prevent shifting and ensuring load protection. Marks protruding property with flags, or reflectors.
  • Transports supplies, materials, equipment, and tools to and from the Gallery. Backs-up to docks to load and unload materials, supplies, and equipment. Loads and unloads vehicles by hand or using material handling equipment.
  • Checks material loaded or delivered against various documents to certify condition and quantity of property. Obtains signature, date, and time from receiving personnel on receiving documents.
