Duties

You will serve as a Computer Scientist, and you will join a fast-paced, and collaborative group of scientists, engineers, IT specialists, and analysts in the Defense and Safety Systems (DSS) program area.This position will focus on contributing to DSS applied research projects. The DSS research program aims to ensure the safety of Coast Guard members, the Maritime Transportation System (MTS), and the public now and into the future. Examples of defensive systems that will protect our assets from evolving threats include non-lethal vessel stopping technologies, counter uncrewed systems (C-UxS), directed energy systems, and cybersecurity systems in Operational Technology (OT). Safety systems efforts focus on improvements to mariner safety and increasing the probability of successful search and rescue, as well as assessing modern vessel construction techniques and materials that will ensure that the service knows how to regulate, respond to emergencies, and utilize advancements in ship design

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

  • Performing professional computer science work of limited scope and complexity in support of research or projects.
  • Applying computer science methods and techniques to develop solution to USCG mission needs.
  • Reviewing computer science technologies and making recommendations that reflect significant findings and solutions to unusual problems in the computing and artificial intelligence areas.
  • Building and utilizing data acquisition system to support any RDC assigned research.
  • Contributing to test events, field exercises, lab demonstrations, and outreach events to conduct test and evaluation to support C5I projects and share information with internal and external sponsors and stakeholders.
  • Reporting status and technical progress to project managers and engages in all required project tracking tasks.
  • Writing comprehensive research reports, presenting findings to sponsors and stakeholders, and briefing a wide range of audiences from field technicians and operators to senior level agency executives.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements Qualifications for Computer Science Series, 1550:

Degree:
Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any
combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

NOTE: TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, applicants must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
