Duties

Help
  • Maintain power and hand tools, and shop equipment in proper condition by oiling, greasing, cleaning, replacing, and adjusting parts, sharpening saws, drills, and cutting tools.
  • Install, repair, and maintain high pressure piping systems such as hydraulic and high-pressure air or oil line systems.
  • Use Oxygen/Acetylene cutting torches and arc welders to remove, modify and or fabricate metal components.
  • Layout work, prepare sketches or drawings, determines, and sets up various types of machines and tools.
  • Interpret various types of drawing manuals, specification, blueprints, and sketches, etc. to accomplish the job.
  • Operate and maintain pneumatic and electric impact drills, grinders, chain saws, band saws, circular saws, hand drills, drill presses, reamers, and metal fabricating machines.
  • Work with variety of pipe to measures, cuts, bends, threads, packs, and joins piping to pipe fittings.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires Corps of Engineer licenses associated with this position.
  • This position requires physical examination.
  • This position requires to lift objects weighing up to 50 and up to 100 pounds.
  • This position requires to obtain and maintain a valid State motor vehicle operator's license prior to appointment.
  • This position requires Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) to remote sites throughout the region up to 75%.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.

Qualifications

This position is a TERM position. Position is temporary and may be extended up to a maximum of eight years. This position may be converted to permanent career or career-conditional appointment without further competition as long as all requirements are met, and a conversion opportunity exists. To be eligible for conversion, employee must complete at least 2 years of current continuous service under a term appointment in the competitive service AND employee must have a current performance rating at least fully successful or equivalent.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Performing maintenance and repair of various items of installed, dam operating, or mobile equipment and machinery. Been able to use a variety of hand and power shop tools such as drill press, bench grinder, planer, jointer, vise, and table saw. Experience operating heavy equipment to include overhead cranes, forklift truck, pick-up truck, manlifts and skid steers to safely and accurately maneuver supplies and materials to accomplish repairs, replacement, or creation of projects.

  • Physical Effort: Makes repairs on equipment or in installations often on high or hard to reach areas from ladders or platforms. Is required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds and operates equipment.
  • Working Conditions: Works outside the majority of time in all types of weather. Is subject to injury by tools, equipment, flying debris, and similar objects. Is exposed to mud, dirt, dust, chemical compounds, high noise levels, burns, and fumes. Is subject to danger of falls and drowning while working on moving equipment and structures over or on water. Works behind bulkheads below water level, characteristically works on or adjacent to water. Occasionally works at heights over 30 feet.
