About the Position: This position is located at the Logistics Readiness Center (LRC), U.S. Military Academy, West Point. Located in the scenic Hudson River valley, only 50 miles from New York City, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point is a four-year academic institution, and the oldest continuously occupied military post in America.

Duties

Help
  • Load food trays into heated food carts.
  • Follow directions from a higher graded worker, assists the cooking staff when removing cooked items from baking sheets, pans, etc. and placing in serving trays.
  • Assist in opening packages of food items and setting up on trays for serving or further preparation.
  • Make cold sandwiches using prepared ingredients and pack box lunches.
  • Follow established steps to assemble the bread, filling, lettuce, tomato or other items common to lunchbox sandwiches.
  • Assemble cardboard boxes used for takeout lunches.
  • Move, pack, unpack, sort, segregate, arrange, stack, pile and/or relocate food items and cleaning supply items.
  • Perform heavy duty cleaning tasks such as ceilings, storage rooms, walk-in refrigerators and freezers, washing floors and walls with powered equipment, and/or sanitizing garbage rooms.
  • Dispose of and/or bailing of cardboard using a hydraulic machine.

  • Must obtain and maintain a favorable (Tier 1) background investigation to work in restricted areas.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination and periodic physical examinations.
  • Must work shift schedules that include early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • This is an inclement weather essential position, and the incumbent must report to work and/or remain in the position in bad weather, natural disasters, or other crisis.
  • Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds without assistance, and lift and carry items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Must wear safety gear.
  • Must wear a uniform.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Food Service Worker~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Food Service Worker tasks to include: 1) assisting in preparing simple foods such as: making sandwiches, cutting vegetables, assembling and tossing fresh fruits or salads, measuring and weighing ingredients, and brewing coffee and tea; and 2) operating basic kitchen equipment such as choppers, can openers, deep fryers, meat slicers, tilt grills, ovens and/or hand tools for preparation of food. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: The work requires moderate to heavy physical effort involved in such activities as frequently lifting trays and loading dishwashers, scouring and scrubbing large-size cooking utensils and pushing heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing and delivering supplies, constant standing or walking, lifting items weighing as much as 40 pounds, and frequently lifting items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance from other workers of the same or higher grade level.
  • Working Conditions: The work is performed in a kitchen and class I ration storage area that is considered hot and humid caused by cooking and dishwashing equipment. The area is well lighted, noisy from food service activities and the employee is subject to slips or falls on floors. Also works in relatively cool areas depending upon the daily tasking. There is exposure to cuts, bruises, scrapes and burns while working in an area where cooking is performed. The employee is required to wear protective shoes, appropriate hearing protection, and gloves or other safety and food handling items required by food handling guides. May be required to perform duties in areas assigned to the Cadet Mess, such as training camps and at the field feeding sites.
