Major Duties

  • Performs simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades.
  • Operate trucks up to 10,000GVW. Will assist other divisions as directed.
  • Performs custodial services, routine building and grounds maintenance, trail maintenance, and dock maintenance. Uses a variety of hand and power tools. Assists with technical maintenance such as plumbing, mechanics, and other utility work. Will operate push and riding lawnmowers to maintain historic landscapes and housing areas.
  • Operate small boats to transport people and supplies at the park.
  • Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Only-Lead Testing: The duties of this position require occasional exposure to lead based material due to the lead paint removal and encapsulating that is completed. As a result of this exposure employees will be required to be subject
    to lead (blood) testing.
  • Apostle Islands National Lakeshore Only - Respiratory Fit Testing: The duties of this position require occasional exposure to particles and fumes in painting, carpentry, grinding or other work-related activities. For safety reasons when hazards cannot be eliminated air purifying respirators are required. Employees using respirators are required to participate in a respiratory protection program which includes medical evaluations. fit tests. and following procedures for proper respirator use.
AREA The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April-May but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April-May

  • Driver's License: You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • Uniform: You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
  • Boat Operation: This position requires the operation of small boating vessels and completion of the Motorboat Operation Certification Course after EOD.
  • Isle Royale National Park Housing: Isle Royale National Park is on a remote island in Lake Superior. Employees live in dormitory-style housing with co-workers for the duration of the season. This requires six-hour boat rides each way to and from the island on Lake Superior which can have varying weather.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading)
  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment

Screen-Out Minimum Qualification:

Perform simple and routine work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, and other related trades. I have used simple measures and hand tools to replace broken planks on picnic tables; broken windows using precut stock; minor adjustments or replaces hinges, latches, and catches. I have used a brush and roller on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels. I have performed routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances. I have operated a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites. I have cleaned and serviced chemical toilets, restrooms, and other campground or visitor facilities. My work has been without more than normal supervision and I referred unusual problems to the supervisor or a higher graded employee.

Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
