**INITIAL CUT OFF IS Monday, 16 December 2024**This is an open continuous vacancy announcement. Applicants will be referred periodically throughout the announcement period. Major Duties

  • Serves as a work leader, provides guidance and monitors progress of work assignments for a crew of 3 - 8 WG-05 Maintenance Workers (MVO).
  • Demonstrates proper work methods in operation of mowing and roadside trimming, raking sweeping, fence construction, trail maintenance, and landscaping using walking or riding power equipment.
  • Rakes, sweeps, mows and trims landscaped, grounds using waling or riding power equipment up to an including 38 HP Hustler riding type tractors, equipped with 60 inch mower decks and bagger attachments.
  • Operates trucks up to five (5) ton capacity equipped with four wheel drive and dump beds with 16 foot trailers.
  • Performs ground Maintenance including; but not limited to, raking roadsides and ditches, patching holes bituminous paving materials, using both cold and hot mix, trail repair and construction, hazardous tree removal, application of approved chemicals for the control of unwanted vegetation and fence construction and repair.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance and minor repair of equipment in the scope of operations, including oil changes; blade sharpening, weed eater spool maintenance etc. Incumbent collects trash and litter from receptacles at buildings and roadside areas on park grounds as established in the park roadside trash collection plan.

  • Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

SCREEN OUT: Possesses the ability to lead or supervise, performing the full range of duties of a Maintenance Worker Leader, WL-4749-05 AND possesses knowledge and experience to demonstrate the ability to independently lead a crew to completion of a variety of landscape preservation tasks that include: 1.) Operation of landscape equipment, trucks, trailers, and tractors; 2) trail maintenance; 3) fence repair and construction; 4) trail maintenance; 5) tree removal, 6) construction projects; and 7) leading a work crew.

TEMP NTE 1040 Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).

If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.

The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.

Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.

Physical Demands
Moderate to heavy physical effort may be required in operating equipment. in lifting 45-100 pounds (i.e .. lifting trash containers. moving tables and benches. loading and unloading cargo, repairing/constructing roads, trails and fences, using hand tools to dig and bakfill ditches etc.). This position is required to walk. climb, bend. crouch, stretch, sit. work in cramped areas?? work on ladders/scaffolding, in trees at varied heights, etc.

Working Conditions
The work of this position is performed mostly outdoors, sometimes in dusty, wet, windy conditions, in extreme temperatures occasionally reaching 90 plus degree temperatures with high humidity. Work is performed on uneven ten-a in and steep slopes presenting a high degree of exposure to potential injury and equipment damage. At times work is performed in an open driver's seat which could expose the operator to exhaust fumes depending on weather conditions.
