The Senior Researcher Advanced Materials Technologies:

  • Leads strategic planning for new technical capability in emerging fields of materials research and technology and provides recommendations on strategic investments and technology forecasting to Agency and Center leadership in Aeronautics and Space Exploration.
  • Conducts systematic, intensive research to further knowledge in advanced/high-performance materials that have general applicability for use by others.
  • Represents Langley on Agency technical teams/committees/panels responsible for problem solving.
  • Demonstrated recognition of technical excellence through current peer-reviewed publications.
  • Represents Langley on technical panels/committees; delivers expertise in planning and investigation teams; demonstrates technical leadership and innovation through principal role on funded projects.
  • Leads technical consulting and maintaining global awareness of international competitive research and technology environment in advanced/high-performance materials, and documented impact of technical contributions to materials technologies relevant to Agency missions.
  • Fosters and continually drives a culture of engagement, diversity, inclusiveness, excellence, and innovation within and outside of the organization and NASA.   • The individual selected will be required to file an 'Executive Branch Personnel Financial Disclosure Report' (OGE-278) in accordance with the Ethics in Government Act of 1978.
  • Successful completion of a background investigation commensurate with the risk and sensitivity level of the position.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess expert knowledge and at least 3 years of directly related specialized experience in development of new high-performance materials and associated novel processing methods for advanced aerospace applications.

At least 1 year of this experience must have been in planning and executing difficult programs of national significance or planning and executing specialized programs that show outstanding attainments in the field of research or consultation. At least 1 year of the directly related specialized experience must be at least equivalent to experience at the GS-15 level.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement. To be eligible, you must clearly state in your resume the following: degree, major and/or minor, and college/university.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science.

Additional information

If the selectee is a current NASA employee with placement rights, the employee will receive a temporary promotion and serve for a period of 3 to 5 years. Upon conclusion of the temporary promotion, the selectee will either return to an appropriate position at a grade level no lower than the grade previously held OR will be converted permanently without further competition.

If the selectee is not a current NASA employee, the selectee will be placed on a term appointment for a period of 3 to 5 years. Upon conclusion of the term appointment, the appointment will either conclude OR the selectee may be converted permanently without further competition.

This temporary promotion or term appointment may be terminated at any time.

Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
