Duties

Help

The Associate Director for Production is responsible for the planning, coordination, and direction of a full range of technical exhibit design, administration, and management services through four senior-level subordinate supervisors. 

In this position you will:

  1. Oversee the exhibition design and production operations of SIE, monitor schedules, and create staffing matrices and allocations.
  2. Develop and monitor programs, policies, and operations instructions to affect a coordinated management effort that will maximize SIE’s current and future effectiveness and efficiencies.
  3. Supervise; develop performance standards, give advice or instruction on a wide array of work and administrative matters, and hear/resolve/approve disciplinary actions.
  4. Create budget formulation for all programs and projects within SIE.  Oversee staff allocations to assure SIE schedules align with projected office budgets.
  5. Develop and implement strategies for improving SIE’s strategic and marketing plans.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as managing full exhibit operation for a museum, museum support operation, or cultural center, including coordinating/monitoring/planning all aspects of exhibit development, design, and production; establishing organizational goals, policies, and programs; and developing and implementing strategic plans for improving efficiencies, client base, and economic health.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

How you will be evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:

  1. Skill to plan, assess, and monitor the full array of exhibit development, design and production including managing multiple complex projects, creating resource allocations, and reviewing technical data such as design drawings and fabrication details.
  2. Ability to identify, advise, and correct management and production problems; assess SIE’s needs and establish short and long- term goals.
  3. Skill to supervise a diverse group of employees whose work varies from conceptual thinking to the execution/building of exhibits.
  4. Knowledge to prepare and monitor budgets and contracts for the development, design, and production of museum exhibits.
  5. Ability to strategize to increase office revenues, exhibition functions across SI and number of units within SIE, and to facilitate and negotiate across the SI and outside.
