Duties

Help

The Supervisory Information Technology Specialist will serve as the Assistant Director for the Information Technology program and has the responsibility to develop new concepts, theories, programs, or to solve problems that have previously resisted solution for the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH).

In this position, you will:

  • Conduct business analysis of the Museum’s business IT needs and goals to develop innovative solutions to resolve difficult issues, identify management improvements and cost savings, and effectively leverage emerging opportunities.
  • Direct and plan the Museum’s scientific computing and technical infrastructure, support services, and digital assets, as well as develop policies to ensure appropriate use, maintenance, and security of systems.
  • Develop, plan, and implement an IT program including IT infrastructure, network administration, system security, voice/data communications systems, server maintenance, desktop support, data storage and archiving, disaster planning and recovery, audio-visual support in public space computing and programs, and custom application development.
  • Identify hardware, software, and communication requirements related to digital assets, IT services, and web development in support of Museum goals.
  • Recommend and/or develop appropriate hardware and software level of technology for Museum applications.
  • Direct and supervise the personnel and day-to-day functions within the office, including the assignment and review of work, initiation of training requests and personnel actions for the staff, conduct formal evaluations of employee performance, and resolution of problems and any complaints or grievances.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

Experience GS-15: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service.  For this position, specialized experience is defined as (1) Providing leadership in planning, development, and implementation of a full range of IT programs including, digital and IT infrastructure (cloud and hybrid computing and storage solutions, database management systems, audio/video storage and delivery), network administration, and system security for a museum or similar cultural or educational institution preserving and disseminating information for public audiences.  (2) Advising senior management on issues related to major aspects of IT system design and integration, performing cost benefit analyses of technology options, and serving as an advocate for innovation and process improvement through the integration of IT in the organization’s business process

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

  • Ability to plan the personnel structure of an IT office and direct the efforts of staff and contractor personnel possessing technical expertise in varied disciplines of IT.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with high level management officials, including scientific and administrative staff, project managers and managers, subject matter specialists, and contractor representatives, to present ideas in a logical, analytical sequence and express thoughts clearly and concisely.
  • Skill in assigning priorities and balancing conflicting requirements for an organization, demonstrating tact and diplomacy in dealing with persons having vested interests in findings and recommendations.
