Duties

Help

The Museum Program Specialist coordinates arrangements for visiting scientists, graduate and postdoctoral fellows, and resident scientists at SMSFP and to provide research support.

For this position, you will:

  • Serve as research program coordinator, assists with collecting and maintaining research data and photographs, and operates small boats for research.

  • Provide support of marine research and long-term monitoring, and development and maintenance of databases on biological and environmental data.
  • Perform administrative work related to budget management, travel, purchasing, and accounting, and prepares contracts, scopes of work and annual reports.
  • Oversee and coordinate arrangements for visiting scientists including preparing laboratories and equipment and providing site and facilities orientation.

The work consists of international flights and field expeditions in remote settings. Field work requires physical exertion in swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving, as well as exposure to sun and hot, humid weather conditions. Laboratory work may require standing or sitting for long periods of time as well as walking, bending, lifting, and handling equipment and collections.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system that is close or similar to the work of the position. For this position specialized experience is defined as managing a museum program and coordinating arrangements for visiting scientists, graduate and postdoctoral fellows, and resident scientists at a marine research center; providing research support, which includes operating small boats and vehicles and maintaining and purchasing scientific equipment and supplies.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: Ph.D. or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree related to the position may be substituted to meet the experience requirements.

  1. Knowledge of research and monitoring methods, biological science and techniques associated with a marine research program.
  2. Ability to analyze research data and maintain databases of literature, ecological and environmental data, museum collections, and photo and video files.
  3. Knowledge of Federal budgetary policies, procedures, regulations, and accounting systems to assure budget estimates and submissions conform to requirements, guidelines, and financial objectives.
  4. Ability to work with staff, visitors, postdoctoral researchers, graduate students, and volunteers in marine field station setting.
  5. Ability to communicate marine related topics to a variety of audiences.
