Performs the full scope of surveying aid type duties and a variety of surveying technical duties. Serves as instrument person on a variety of kinds of surveys of the third and forth order of accuracy, using the transit, level, distance measuring device, allidale and/or other specialized survey instruments. Reduces raw data in the field while progressing along the survey line. Prepares or reviews the preparation of field notes, random lined diagrams and computations to determine whether closures are within prescribed lines of accuracy. Perform duties of this position requires the use of motor vehicles. In most cases this will be a 4-wheel drive vehicle or ATV.
Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in a setting that is adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated. When doing fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomfort from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.
If selected for this position you will need to complete the Federal Information Systems Security Awareness (FISSA) training prior to start date (if applicable).
Specialized experience is technical work which provided the knowledge and skills needed for work in the type of surveying involved. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector. OR
Specialized Experience Requirements:
In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled. Examples:
For GS-03: There is no Specialized experience required. However to qualify you must have 6 months of general experience which demonstrates the ability to perform Survey aid duties OR Successful completion of 1 year of postsecondary education that included at least one course in surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics.
For GS-04: One (1) year specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-03). Specialized experience at this level is defined as having operated electronic measuring equipment such as: GPS, satellite positions instruments and assisting with the marking of reference points. OR Successful completion of 2 years of postsecondary education that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-3 or equivalent.
For GS-05: One (1) year specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-04). Specialized experience at this level is defined as experience in using survey equipment and related electronic equipment; and experience processing surveying data according to well-defined methods and established formulas. OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution (a) with major study in an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-3 or equivalent.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
