The biologist is engaged in the study, inventory, monitoring, restoration, and management of a broad range of natural resources which may include, but is not limited to: vegetation, wildlife, air and water quality, soils, geology, geomorphology, hydrology, and other physical sciences.

As a developmental GS-09 Biologist, the incumbent performs the full range of duties but with close supervision and direction including:

Carrying out natural resource management through the study, inventory, monitoring, restoration, and management of a broad range of natural resources. Program areas may include, but are not limited to, vegetation, wildlife, fisheries, exotic and pest species, sensitive and at-risk species, and associated ecological components such as air, water, and soil.
Work cooperatively with other agencies and government entities including Parks Canada and the local Federally Recognized Tribes.
Duties will be performed under closer than normal supervision and assignments will become progressively more difficult until the full-performance level of the GS-11 listed below is reached.

As a GS-11 Biologist, the incumbent will independently:

Carrying out natural resource management through the study, inventory, monitoring, restoration, and management of a broad range of natural resources. Program areas may include, but are not limited to, vegetation, wildlife, fisheries, exotic and pest species, sensitive and at-risk species, and associated ecological components such as air, water, and soil.
Carry out statistically valid data collection protocols, identify and document the significance of findings, and prepare management and scientific reports for peer review and publication.
Develop and conducts scientifically credible protection, mitigation, and restoration projects to prevent resource damage and to restore or maintain integrity of critical habitats.
Work cooperatively with other agencies and government entities including Parks Canada and the local Federally Recognized Tribes.
Represent the park by participating on the Southeast Area Network Inventory & Monitoring Technical Advisory Committee and the Natural Resources Advisory Council.
Serve as the park's GIS coordinator, developing and maintaining GIS data for the whole park.
Serve as the park National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) coordinator and, in conjunction with the Interdisciplinary Team for Compliance, ensure protection of all resources - cultural and natural.

This is a career-seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, the selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. The selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for this position is mid-January through mid-November, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.

Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
You may be required to travel overnight away from home throughout the year. Travel varies by month and is anticipated to be up to 5 nights per month between October and March and occasionally up to 14 nights per month between April and September. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid government issued passport required; admission to Canada is an essential condition of employment. (Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park was designated part of Klondike Gold Rush International Historical Park in partnership with Parks Canada in 1998. National Park Service staff work closely with Parks Canada staff, including travel along the Canadian portion of the historic Chilkoot Trail.)

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/01/2020-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

BASIC REQUIREMENT
Must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Must have courses equivalent to a major as described above (e.g., 24 semester hours) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline closely related to biology; PLUS appropriate experience or additional course work. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above. Physical demands: This position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.

Work environment: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all type of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, caves, firelines, arctic environments, wetlands, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for occasional telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

Salary range by grade level:
GS-09 step 1 through step 10: $59,165 to $76,915
GS-11 step 1 through step 10: $71,583 to $93,056
There is a 4.40% tax free cost of living allowance that will be added to the pay above. Pay is subject to annual review and adjustment.
