The duties described below are at the full performance GS-11 grade level.
Serves as the District forestry program coordinator and as such, has staff responsibility to management for the forestry program in the District and in all Field Offices. The program covers management, access, development, planning and any other functions concerning forestry.
Administers all commercial and noncommercial, advertised and non-advertised sect, negotiated and competitive sales of forest products throughout the District office area. Assures compliance with contract provisions by inspection of sale areas and operations. Administers the sales and compliance procedures for other vegetative products. Designates areas for both commercial and noncommercial harvest of woodland products. Will participate, regularly, as team leader in preparing Environmental Assessment (EA) for forest product sales and other forestry activities and hazardous fuels projects. Prepares the forestry portion of Environmental Impact Statements (EIS). Reviews other EAs, EISs and activity plans which may impact the forest program, highlighting possible conflict and suggesting workable solutions.
Participates on prescribed fire and fire suppression projects as determined by individual firefighter qualifications.
Factor 8 - Physical Demands - The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of walking, standing, crouching, or riding horses or ATVs over rough, uneven, or rocky terrain. Extended periods of driving four wheel drive vehicles over rough terrain is required to reach remote areas. Overnight camping is sometimes required. The incumbent has to be physically fit for periods of rigorous activity while performing work assignments.
Factor 9 - Work Environment - The work is performed outdoors in remote areas. The work involves regular and recurring exposure to moderate risks and discomfort (e.g., outdoor camping, and insect borne disease). Special safety precautions and specialized equipment are required. The incumbent will have a wide variety of physical demands varying from office work which will involve 50% of their time to the remaining 50% of their time in the field. While in the field, the incumbent will be working in areas ranging from flat to extremely steep and in temperatures from below 0 to 100+ degrees. In some instances considerable walking to reach the work site will be required. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.

Specialized experience is further defined as: Experience leading a team, giving advice and guidance on vegetation treatments, fire rehabilitation, forestry and/or seeding projects; and experience navigating with global positioning system (GPS) OR meet the basic requirement AND I have completed 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master`s degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in biological sciences or a directly related field OR meet the basic requirement AND possess an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above.
For the GS-11: Meet the basic requirements AND 1 year of experience as a Natural Resource Specialist or related position equivalent to GS-9 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is further defined as: Experience performing difficult, responsible work in fire and fuels management which includes providing technical advice in fuels management work, budget and annual work plans; and overseeing contracts for fuels reduction or timber improvement work OR meet the basic requirements AND completed 3 years of graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree in the field of natural resource management or directly related field OR meet the basic requirements AND have a combination of experience and second year graduate level education described above.
