The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
-Conduct routine to complex analyses that require exercising independent judgment; engages in independent or team efforts or scientific investigations to confirm test results or resolve any problems associated with BEP products and raw materials; informs peers, CORs, Quality personnel, production personnel and supervisor of nonconforming results.
-Operates a full range of laboratory equipment, which includes chemical, physical, and optical test equipment, such as titrators, density meters, crumple testers, abrasion testers, UV/IR lamps, image capture/analysis systems, micrometers, fold testers, tear testers, spectrometers, gas chromatographs, microscopes and universal mechanical testing systems; reviews testing methods and submit changes when necessary; coordinates, trains and assists lower level scientists, chemists and technicians in the use of laboratory equipment; develops test plans and conducts special investigations.
-Provides technical support and solutions to currency manufacturing production problems and/or participates in investigative trouble shooting, which may involve such activities as collecting, analyzing and testing raw materials, finished products, and by-products in support of process product improvement, procurement, and contract administration.
The experience may have been gained in either the public or private sector. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. SUITABILITY, CLEARANCE & REQUIREMENTS: A background investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant’s successful completion of a background investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for disqualification in the hiring process. The background investigation process conducted by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is very thorough. Therefore it is imperative that applicants exercise candor and honesty when answering background questionnaires, especially as it relates to arrest, employment, education, finances, illegal drug use, and/or other criminal history. Falsification discovered in security documents or during the background investigation process may result in an immediate negative suitability determination or immediate revocation of your interim clearance (if applicable).
Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
Combination of education and experience - education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
Combination of education and experience - course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Specialized experience:
For the GS-09, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
- Applying principles and concepts of general engineering and science in order to research, interpret and carry out assignments; AND
- Communicating basic level technical analysis information through oral discussions/presentations and written fact sheets/reports; AND
- Investigating and analyzing data trends

Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree
For the GS-07, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes:
- Communicating basic level technical analysis information through oral discussions/presentations and written fact sheets/reports.
OR
Education: 1 year of graduate-level education; or superior academic achievement.
OR

In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-09, you must have been at the GS-07 level for 52 weeks. For the GS-07, you must have been at the GS-05 level for 52 weeks.
This job is interdisciplinary (or multiple series) and will be filled by one of two series: Physical Scientist GS-1301 or Chemist GS-1320 upon selection of the candidate. Each of these two occupational series has a basic qualification requirement. Applicants must meet the basic qualification requirement for at least one of these occupational series, in addition to the specialized experience and/or education requirement for the position. The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
