The Environmental Protection Specialist position is located in the Artesia Administration Division (AAD), Mission and Readiness Support Directorate (MRSD), FLETC, Artesia, NM.
Being an Environmental Protection Specialist makes you a valuable member of the FLETC team and mission. The selected individual will serve as the environmental team lead for the FLETC-Artesia Training Delivery Point, responsible for assisting AAD leadership in the management of daily aspects of FLETC's environmental program. You must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service directing, evaluating, and formulating plans and policies for a large scale, complex environmental and safety/occupational health program that encompasses environmental protection related to noise hazards and lead exposure hazards, motor vehicle maintenance/repair facilities, and hazardous materials storage/management including explosives and/or construction.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps and AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Current and former federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the GS-12 grade level in the federal service. The time-in-grade requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
The Office of Personnel Management must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. Re-employed annuitants’ annual salaries will be reduced by the amount of their retirement annuity and by further cost of living increases. Physical Demands: Work within the office is sedentary; however, incumbent must be mobile and agile in order to physically perform inspections of both indoor and outdoor areas. Such inspections could involve crawling around, over, and under equipment, exposure to excessive heat or cold, and/or exposure to unsafe/unhealthy conditions. Incumbent must be able and willing to travel. The incumbent will be required to monitor training exercises involving automobiles operating at high speeds and performing intricate maneuvers. The requirements of the environmental specialist function require a substantial amount of physical effort, especially when performing collateral safety duties. You must be available for frequent off-duty responses to emergencies and unusual circumstances when necessary.
Work Environment: Work is performed in an office setting and in the field. There is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness such as high noise levels, operating machinery, high temperatures, wet conditions and irritants, hazardous materials to include chemicals, flammable liquids, explosive ranges and storage areas, acid fumes, compressed gases of a dangerous nature, and toxic waste, construction hazards, and hazards associated with indoor and outdoor weapons firing ranges. Some activities may require incumbent to wear personal protective equipment which is hot, bulky, and uncomfortable.
