Serves as principal assistant and or instrument person on survey crews. Assists in the training and directing the activities of other survey aids and technicians in the gathering and recordation of survey data, line running, and distance and angle measurement activities.
Serves as instrument person on a variety of kinds of surveys of the third and fourth order of accuracy, using the GPS equipment, electronic distance measuring devices, total stations, and /or other specialized survey instruments.
Assists in corner calculations and is responsible for monumentation and recording of corner positions.
Assists senior land surveyors in the reduction of data from raw field form to latitudes and departures for mathematical analysis. Computes closures, corner moves, and proportionate measurements for the restoration of lost corners.
Plans and directs corner monumentation crew in measurements for corner moves and ties to accessories. Assures proper procedures and methods are used in the monumentation of corners, markings of corners and accessories and recordation of data.
Physical Demands: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in a setting that is adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated. When doing fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests or animals. Employee will adhere to all safety rules.

GS-04: Six months of general experience and six months of specialized experience. Examples of general experience may include working in any professional, technical, or other responsible field that provided you with a familiarity of land surveying techniques. Examples of specialized experience: serving as rodman on surveys requiring special rodding procedures, using any of various types of rods, and selecting measuring or turning points in consideration of terrain and demands of the type of survey involved; and serving as pacer of a leveling party, going ahead of the party and determining in advance the positions the road crew will occupy so that shots will be balanced and instruments can be kept level. OR Successful completion of 2 years of post secondary education that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for the GS-03 grade level. OR A combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.
GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04 level. Examples of specialized experience may include conducting surveys, typically with an assistant, using hand instruments such as hand levels and compasses, making simple traverse surveys using compass and tape, measuring small land areas, using rod, tape and hand level, to obtain rough estimates of yardage to be excavated; and performing recording assignments which require concentration and specialized skill such as that required in making manual computations that involve elementary arithmetic processes made complex by virtue of the number and variety of manipulations involved and the speed with which successive readings are called. OR Successful completion of a full four year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with major study in an appropriate field such as surveying, engineering, construction, or that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science or mathematics. OR a combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.
GS-06: One year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-05 level. Examples of specialized experience may include operating transits, levels, alidades, and other instruments on surveys of the third or fourth order of accuracy along clear, accessible routes, running short traverse lines from known points along unobstructed routes, running level circuits between benchmarks of known elevation following established or clearly designated routes; and selecting and recording descriptive data when complete, detailed survey notes are required. OR Successful completion of 18 semester hours of graduate level courses in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science or mathematics. OR A combination of experience and education to meet the total experience.
May require completion of a 1 year probationary period.
Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

KSA 1: Knowledge and experience of survey methods, techniques and procedures sufficient to carry out survey assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
KSA 2: Knowledge of the operation, adjustment and maintenance of surveying equipment and instruments (transits, theodolites, EDMs, Global Positioning Systems) sufficient to operate, take measurements and conduct training.
KSA 3: Knowledge of mapping, photogrammetry and cartographic concepts, processes and terminology to research and abstract data pertinent to the cadastral survey from various source records.
KSA 4: Knowledge of fundamental trigonometry and algebra sufficient to prepare field notes and check accuracy of survey.
KSA 5: Ability to work in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Can lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety.
