Open to all qualified U.S. Citizens that meet the eligibility requirements for the Pathways Recent Graduates Program as described below.
As a Geologist within the Pacific Coastal & Marine Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
-Construct, test and implement numerical models and algorithms (e.g., Delft3D, Deflt3D-FM, SWAN, XBeach, Stockton, TAW) in support of the Coastal Climate Impacts, Coastal Storm Modeling System (CoSMoS) and Coastal Habitats in Puget Sound Projects via a series of Matlab codes, ensuring model stability, managing large volumes of data, and evaluating data and model quality.
-Design and develop computationally efficient modeling approaches and communication with online servers for real-time and offline applications. Build unstructured and curvilinear grids for complicated coastal settings, including protected coastal embayments and high-energy open coast settings.
-Perform model-model and model-measurement comparisons and error analyses, overall data analysis and interpretation, and dissemination of results.
-Prepare written reports or parts of reports describing data collection analysis techniques and interpretation. Present project results at meetings and conferences with assistance from supervisor.
-Collect and process high resolution beach and coastal bluff topographic data and nearshore bathymetry using Differential and Real-Time Kinematic GPS and a variety of surveying methods (walking, and ground and aerial structure-from-motion photogrammetry).
-Collect and maintain remote camera systems (ARGUS) to gather time-series imagery data of coastal processes; analyze remote camera data to characterize coastal processes (wave runup, beach change).
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Fieldwork may require moderate to strenuous activities such as hiking, swimming, wading, carrying up to 40 pounds, driving vehicles with trailers, and/or operating small vessels. Fieldwork is performed in and on the ocean, estuaries, and coastal lands and is subject to temperature extremes and hazardous conditions such as breaking waves and strong water currents and may include work in the water.
Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing obligation before a new card can be issued.
The Recent Graduate Program lasts for 1 year. Participants who successfully complete the Recent Graduate Program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent appointment or a term (1-4 years in duration) appointment without further competition.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: All applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for GEOLOGIST at all grade levels:
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in geology. In addition to the geology course work included in the degree, it must also have included or been supplemented by 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography. OR
All applicants must meet qualification and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement.
