Analyzes current fire management plans and initiates changes within guidelines or makes recommendations to meet changing conditions within the limits of current or anticipated funding. Ensures that the fire management program complies with environmental laws, regulations and policy. Provides leadership, coordination and direction in the application of standards, methods, and guidelines for all fire and aviation management program elements in the Northwest Colorado Wild land Fire Group. Works with other agencies in the development and delivery of cooperative fire prevention programs and training. Develops and implements a communication plan that includes briefing decision makers and affected stakeholders. Serves on various interagency committees, teams, and work groups dealing with specific local, geographic or national fire management issues. Manages unit aviation operations at the local level and serves as the unit aviation officer or subject matter expert. Directs and supervises all phases of the budget formulation process and initiates changes as appropriate. Monitors the expenditure of funds to assure fiscal integrity and correct application of financial standards. Ensures that the fuels management program is consistent with ecosystem management principles and land use plans. Establishes priorities for fire hazard reduction and fuels management based on minimizing potential damage and maximizing multiple resource benefit and enhancement. Coordinates and initiates all fire management activities based on firefighter and public safety, cost effectiveness, and values to be protected consistent with resource objectives by using the full range of strategic and tactical options as described in an approved Fire Management Plan (FMP). Coordinates the management of wildland fires with cooperating agencies on multi-jurisdictional wildland fires. Monitors fire season severity predictions, fire behavior, and fire activity levels and takes appropriate actions to ensure safe, efficient and effective operations. Organizes, trains, equips, and directs a qualified work force to meet local, geographic area or national level fire program management needs. Provides technical and administrative supervision to the unit. Plans and directs overall work to be accomplished by subordinate supervisors, sets and adjusts priorities, and work schedules. Assigns work based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of the assignments, and the capabilities of the employees. Develops performance standards and evaluates the work of subordinates. Advises, counsels or instructs employees on technical and administrative matters. Works to resolve complaints and grievances at the first level supervisor. Initiates disciplinary measures as needed.

As a condition of employment must complete M-581 within one year of entry on duty.

possess a 4-year degree in the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resources management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

a combination of education and qualifying experience which included courses equivalent to a major (24 semester hours or equivalent) as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education which totals four years. To satisfy this requirement, the nature and quality of this course work must have been such that it would serve as a prerequisite for more advanced study in the field or subject-matter area. This means the required course work must show progression beyond the associate degree level in directly related coursework, such that it may be considered to be leading towards a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resources management, chemistry or related disciplines.

Physical Demands: Normally the work is sedentary but often requires physical exertion while overseeing fire suppression activities including walking over rough, steep, uneven terrain in all types of weather. The incumbent is faced with emergency situations at all hours and must respond quickly. The position may require long shifts or multi-day assignments under primitive living conditions during emergencies. During the fire season, extended fire assignments away from the unit may be required under very stressful conditions.
Working Conditions: Most work is performed in an office setting. Field work is sometimes performed in steep terrain where surfaces may be uneven, rocky, or covered with thick vegetation. Temperatures are frequently extreme, both from weather and fire conditions where the presence of smoke and/or dust conditions are frequently severe.
This is a secondary-administrative firefighter position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U. S. C. 8412 (d) (FERS). PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet qualification requirements, but may not be eligible for special retirement coverage. If such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system.
