Duties
- Operate one or more types of heavy equipment to excavate, backfill, grade, or level earth to rough specifications on such projects as breaking new ground for trails, roads, canals, or other sites.
- Move earth on mountains and steep slopes, graded curves and shoulders, rocky or soft ground, hilly forests, and other surfaces with similar rough features. Operate a forklift to load and unload materials in an outdoor and/or indoor environment.
- Perform routine/minor preventative maintenance, repairs, and safety inspections on engineering equipment and/or motor vehicles.
- The operators follow oral instructions or written work orders while performing the more difficult tasks of rough grading the earth to general contour desired as well as fine surfacing on flat or rolling terrain.
- Work is performed without direct supervision and responsibility for the safe operation of the equipment and for seeing that the equipment is not damaged is greater because of the requirement to work on rough terrain.

Work is performed in all types of weather, often in an open driver's seat or platform, on hills, slopes, grades, rolling surfaces, and forests. The operators are exposed to injury due to the possibility of the equipment overturning. They are also subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust.

We are a small bureau with a big and complex job, determining the best combination of uses for public lands based on good science and input from the public both in local communities and across the country. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.
