The General Counsel (GC) of the DoD, appointed by the President, is the chief legal officer and principal advisor to the Secretary of Defense, overseeing legal policy and services. The GC also directs DLSA, providing legal support to the OSD, Defense Agencies and Field Activities. Counsel at DIU operate under the authority of GC, Principal Deputy GC, and Deputy GC (Acquisition & Logistics).

Incumbents typical work assignments may include the following:
1) Government Contract Law. The incumbent provides legal advice and services related to the full range of government contract issues, including those relating to the award and administration of contracts, and to the resolution of contract disputes.
2) Ethics and Standards of Conduct. Incumbent is responsible to ensure that the DOD Standards of Conduct and the DOD Joint Ethics Regulation receive high visibility and that the highest ethical standards are applied within the functions supported. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting training as required on topics to support and ensure DIU operations and initiatives are compliant with federal law, regulations, and DOD and DON instructions, directives, and policies.
3) Acquisition and Fiscal Law. Incumbent provides legal counsel and advice to DIU in the area of business and commercial law. Incumbent provides legal advice at all stages (including planning) of the acquisition process, including privatization and insourcing or outsourcing initiatives; thereby ensuring these efforts progress legally and efficiently. Incumbent drafts, reviews, negotiates, and interprets contractual documents as necessary for the acquisition of DIU supplies and services to ensure documents conform to all applicable statutes and executive orders, regulations and administrative rulings, and court decisions.
4) Assistance in Litigation of Cases and Implementation of Court Decisions. The incumbent provides technical assistance and information to government attorneys who are litigating cases involving acquisition issues generally, and particularly government contracts issues. Additionally, the incumbent ensures that decisions of the Federal courts involving contract matters are implemented. The incumbent keeps superiors and colleagues advised of important current decisions and pending cases.
5) Preparation and Implementation of Legislation. The incumbent drafts or assists in drafting legislation involving acquisition reform and government contracts matters as they may impact DoD programs and operations to ensure they properly take account of departmental concerns. The incumbent reviews and evaluates such legislative proposals in terms of foreseeable effects on DoD operations and prepares comments recommending concurrence, nonconcurrence, or alternates.
6) Preparation of Memoranda and Reports. The incumbent prepares memoranda and reports on issues referred by operating officials in OSD, the military departments, and the defense agencies. The incumbent responds to congressional inquiries on a wide variety of issues.
