Serves as Division Director of the Division of Graduate Education (DGE) and as a member of the leadership team of the Directorate for STEM Education (EDU). As part of EDU senior leadership, shares responsibility for developing programmatic focus of the Directorate and efficiently connecting this with the operational functions of the agency. The mission of EDU is to provide the research and development foundation to develop a diverse science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce ready to advance the frontiers of science and engineering for society, and a STEM-literate public. To support this mission, DGE has a leadership responsibility in NSF to develop programs that support graduate training, promote innovations, and build the knowledge base to inform improvements in graduate education in science and engineering. These programs include the Graduate Research Fellowship Program, NSF Research Traineeship, CyberCorps: Scholarship for Service Program, and the Innovations in Graduate Education Program.
The Division Director has managerial and oversight responsibilities for the effective use of division staff and resources, and for building teams and coalitions to meet organizational goals and objectives. This includes leading the activities of DGE, assessing the needs and trends, developing breakthrough opportunities, implementing overall strategic planning, and setting policy. He or she will supervise and provide leadership and guidance to senior executive-level DGE staff, program officers, and administrative and support personnel. Additional responsibilities include overseeing the management of the DGE funding portfolio, determining funding requirements, preparing and justifying budget estimates, balancing program needs, allocating resources, overseeing the evaluation of proposals and recommendations for awards and declinations, and representing NSF to relevant external groups. Also, the DGE Division Director fosters and sustains public and private partnerships with other NSF divisions, directorates, Federal agencies, scientific and educational organizations, business, industry, and the academic community to advance the mission and vision of EDU.

The Senior Executive Service (SES) covers managerial positions above GS-15 in the Federal Service. Persons appointed to the SES are eligible for health benefits, life insurance, social security, Federal retirement and thrift savings plan coverage, and participate in the Federal leave system.
