The Inspector General (IG) of the Department of Education (Department) heads an independent and objective organization responsible for audit, investigation, and other services related to programs and operations of the Department. The IG provides leadership and coordination and recommends policies for activities designed to promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the administration of programs and operations, as well as to prevent and detect fraud and abuse in such programs and operations. The IG is the principal advisor to the Secretary of the Department on the above matters and is responsible for keeping the Secretary and Congress fully and currently informed about problems and deficiencies relating to the administration of the Department’s programs and operations and the necessity for and progress of corrective action.
The OIG consists of the following six components:
The incumbent will serve as an Investigator performing the following duties:
Independently plans and conducts investigations into allegations of employee misconduct, applying applicable professional standards and appropriate investigative techniques.
Independently plans and conducts quality assurance reviews, risk assessments, internal control reviews, and other reviews of the OIG's audit, investigative, inspection, and administrative activities.
Prepares complete and comprehensive oral and/or written reports that communicate investigative results and/or project objectives, conclusions, findings (including cause and effect), and recommendations to managers and senior leadership.
Develop and guide competent teams for nationwide reviews or assessments, allocating staff and other resources to the accomplishment of the project objectives.
