The Student Trainee (Economist), GS-0199-05/07 position provides opportunities for development and training. Student trainee assignments are designed to orient, train, and increase the incumbent's knowledge in the economist field that help to develop economic and fiscal tools to evaluate current conditions and project future trends in the economy and to measure the impact of policy changes on the economy and governmental programs. Student trainee perform a variety of assignments selected to broaden skills and provide practical experience to prepare for progressively more complex assignments, assignments become more responsible as incumbent increases knowledge and skills through work experience and academic training and may include:
Upon completion of the Student Trainee program, full performance duties typically involve creating, exploring, evaluating, designing, and sharing solutions and the validity of their predicted performance to resolve problems, conditions, and issues and supporting the branch staff in developing budget-related material as needed including but not limited to reviewing materials, conducting literature reviews, and analyzing data.

This is an Excepted Service appointment. As a part of the Pathways Internship Program, the appointment may be extended until the selectee's educational program requirements have been completed. You may be converted, without a break in service to a term (time-limited) or permanent appointment upon graduation and completion of program requirements but there is no guarantee.
This is a year-round internship, and the intent of the position is that the student is able to work at least 640 hours while still in school in order to be eligible for non-competitive conversion.
EOP may non-competitively convert Interns from the Internship Program to a term or permanent (career or career-conditional) position in the competitive service, provided that there is an available position. The conversion is neither mandatory nor guaranteed.

The Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) Budget Review Division (BRD) has four branches and coordinates preparation of the President's Budget, monitors action on budget-related legislation, and supports budget execution throughout the year. This position is for the Budget Analysis Branch (BAB). Analysts in BAB apply financial, economic, statistical and other analytical skills to measure and project the costs of Federal programs, evaluate cost and other implications, and make recommendations. Analysts prepare information for use by the President, members of Congress, OMB officials, and the public.
The position coordinates heavily with other offices in the Budget Review Division and with other offices within OMB and the EOP to compile the data and information necessary to produce these work products.
