This position is that of Afloat Recreation Specialist (NAF Civilian position) on board ships worldwide. The primary purpose of this position also known as "Fun Boss" is to plan, coordinate, organize, and direct a well-balanced afloat recreation program and leisure activities for crew members and embarked personnel aboard United States Navy aircraft carriers and large-deck amphibious assault ships.

Serves on board a large U.S. Navy ship (aircraft carrier, multi-purpose amphibious assault ship or hospital ship) and is responsible for developing a comprehensive Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) program for as many as 5,600 shipboard personnel.
Plans, coordinates, organizes and directs well balanced recreation and leisure activity programs for crew members assigned to the ship, their family members and embarked personnel.
Deploys with ship during underway periods.
Co-manages the ship's intramural and varsity level sports program with the Afloat Fitness Specialist "Fit Boss."
Administers a ticket rebate and tickets sales program.
Operates the ship's recreation equipment checkout program, gear locker.
Organizes and facilitates ship's recreation social activities.
Instructs recreation leisure skills courses.
Advertises and promotes ship's afloat recreation program activities utilizing various resources.
Assists in planning and organizing ship's Command level programs, which could include family members, such as a summer picnic or holiday party.
Coordinates port visits to include gathering information on ports of calls using the Logistics Requisition (LOGREG) or foreign area clearance guides; conducting port briefs to all shipboard personnel via site TV, PowerPoint presentations or in person; planning and implementing trips and tours ashore; and traveling with advanced detachment (Advance Det), when approved.
Assists with drafting of financial plan/annual budget and executing of same.
Assist with keeping the Commanding Officer informed on the status of the afloat recreation fund and program.
Provides guidance in the unauthorized expenditure of ship's Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) afloat recreation funds.
Assists in processing financial reports, summaries, data collection and filing of same.
Instructs and motivates military personnel assigned to the shipboard recreation division on proper operating procedures and policies; conducts the same for volunteers supporting the afloat recreation program.
Reviews and inspects work assignments given to assigned military or volunteers within the recreation division.
Directs designated military personnel and volunteers with tasks in support of the afloat recreation program, when authorized.
Communicates through various formats to include but not limited to; memorandums, executive summaries, slide presentations, briefs and e-mails to effectively correspond with CNIC HQ, ship's command and crew.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of the principles of recreation.
Knowledge of budgeting, internal controls, cash management, fiscal oversight, and inventory systems.
Skill in planning and carrying out an enhanced program in the recreation specialty area which meets the needs of the participating eligible patrons.
Skill in common computer applications such as Microsoft Office or alike program applications to include word files, e-mails, spreadsheets, presentations, calendars and other information technology resources.
Skill in marketing and promoting sports, recreation and leisure activities.
Ability to deploy with ship during underway periods.
Ability to conduct recreation programs and leisure activities.
Ability to direct sporting activities.
Ability to develop and effectively deliver presentations and/or training.

A four-year degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in Recreation Administration or Physical Education.
OR
A two-year degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Recreation Administration or Physical Education, AND two or more years of experience in conducting recreation programs and leisure activities AND experience in directing sports activities.

Have 4 or more years of experience in conducting recreation programs and leisure activities AND experience in directing sports activities.
Position requires periodic deployment aboard a US Navy Ship. 40% sea pay incentive is paid when on deployment.
Due to the unique nature of the position, selectees will be required to complete a pre-employment physical examination and/or overseas medical screening.

At sea, the employee may share a stateroom with a junior officer. Meals are obtained by either joining the Officers' Mess as a paying member or by purchasing meals on the Enlisted Mess Decks.

Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearances. Employment subject to successful Access National Agency Check with Inquiries (ANACI). Must have or be eligible for secret security clearance.
Must be able to obtain and maintain specialized training related to the position, including completion of the CNIC Afloat Recreation Program Management Course (ARPM) within 90 days of hire.
Certification in first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is required within 90 days of hire and must be maintained throughout the course of employment.
This position is not telework eligible.
Some positions have special requirements. Selectee may be required to complete a one (1) year probationary period.
