Duties
Practice of an executive nature, comprised of complex leadership and administrative components, associated with critical heath care issues and activities that influence the organizational mission, health care, and policy (VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G6).
The ACN is accountable to the ADPCS for primary assistance and management of patient care, human and material resources, and operations within Nursing Service. They are responsible for assisting the ADPCS with planning, organizing, directing, controlling, and implementing cost effective nursing care programs. They collaborate with clinical, administrative, and managerial personnel to identify and resolve problems. In the absence of the ADPCS or other Associate Chiefs, assumes specific responsibilities as delegated. The incumbent performs duties of the position in a manner that is appropriate to the ages of patients/families served. The veteran population ranges from adults 18 years and over through the geriatric life span.
Typical duties include but are not limited to:
- Provides leadership in addressing ethical issues that impact patients and staff
- Designs, modifies and implements systems compatible with professional standards, and with th emission and goals of the organization to improve the cost-effective use of resources.
- Plans, develops and implements programs that ensure nursing staff maintain relevant competencies and design programs that benefit patients, families and communities. Utilizes current trends and relevant theory to identify and analyze practice areas for improvement.
- Demonstrates leadership and serves as a consultant for Nursing or other Medical Center staff on professional and/or ethical issues.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient and staff information; adheres to medical center confidentiality policies.
- Promotes effective staffing practices by maximizing the utilization of assigned resources through forecasting and anticipating personnel needs, in relationship to workload demands.
- Develops staff for career progression forecasting new knowledge needs for changing practice environment/population groups and plans, implements and evaluates strategies to meet those needs.
- Mentors/precepts managers, staff and/or students for career advancement.
- Ensures that education and training programs are in place to meet the needs of staff.
- Collaborates with Nursing Education to identify patient care and/or nursing practices issues related to staff competency and develops methodologies for staff development.
- Forecasts requirements necessary for successful long-range program planning and development to effectively deliver health care services to patients
- Demonstrates leadership in developing productive working relationships with groups in other programs, services, academic settings, and community agencies
- Serves as a consultant to nursing professionals and colleagues throughout the Medical Center and community in order to forecast, interpret, and apply nursing care standards.
- Provides leadership in improving and sustaining the quality and effectiveness of care in diverse or
complex programs.

- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript.
