Selected candidates will serve as Student Volunteer Interns with the Department of Labor and will be placed within one of the Department of Labor’s offices or agencies based on skills and academic interests. Student Volunteer Interns will report to a supervisor within the host Agency and will have the opportunity to engage in DOL-wide meetings or events to gain exposure to the broad set of issues and policies that the Department of Labor addresses under its mission. The Student Volunteer Interns will gain experience working with executives, managers, and employees who are committed to advancing the welfare of wage earners, job seekers, and retirees; improving working conditions; advancing opportunities for workforce development and training and assuring work-related benefits and rights. Student Volunteer Interns will assist with a wide variety of administrative, planning, and research activities regarding the development, implementation, and evaluation of organizational policies and priorities. Note: Student Volunteer Interns will not receive a salary from the Department of Labor for this experiential learning assignment. To be placed within the Department of Labor, students must either receive a stipend/grant from an outside academic institution (at the rate of at least $15.00/hour) or, receive academic course credit, and/or credit toward graduation for their internship assignment with the Department. The hours worked per week, work schedule, and the length of the assignment can be flexible and determined between the student, academic institution, and supervisor as long as the work schedule meets the Department’s student volunteer service policy requirements. However, the hours worked cannot exceed 40 hours per week over the course of the 8-10-week Student Volunteer Intern assignment. Before a student may begin volunteer service, written permission must be obtained from an appropriate official of the educational institution in which the student is enrolled. The student, educational institution, and DOL must complete and sign DOL's form DL1-6082 Student Volunteer Agreement.

A Student Volunteer Intern must receive academic credit towards graduation, or, must receive a third-party stipend, grant, or other equivalent financial aid for the assignment and the amount must be equivalent to $15.00 per hour, or the minimum wage rate for the geographic area in which the work will be performed, whichever is higher;
