NIDA, part of NIH, (1) provides national leadership and conducts and supports biomedical and behavioral research, health services research, research training, and health information dissemination with respect to the prevention and treatment of drug use and addiction; (2) plans, conducts, fosters, and supports a comprehensive program of research and research training relating to the causes, prevention, treatment, patterns, and consequences of drug use and addiction, through research performed in its own laboratories and through contracts and grants to scientific institutions and to individuals; (3) supports training in fundamental sciences and clinical disciplines relating to drug use by individual and institutional research training awards; (4) coordinates with other research Institutes and with other Federal health and other agencies in activities relevant to drug use and addiction; (5) conducts and fosters health information dissemination activities, including the collection and dissemination of research findings and related educational materials for health professionals and the lay public; (6) coordinates with institutions and professional associations and with international, national, State, and voluntary agencies working in these areas; and (7) collaborates with SAMHSA on services research issues.
