This position is located in the Digital Programs Office at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The primary purpose is to support the use of digital collections systems and processes across departments, in service of the museum’s goals in digitization, collections stewardship, and access. The duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
-Supports the museum’s digital collections systems and their integration into all collections-related processes to assist in the documentation and stewardship of the museum’s collections.
-Develops trainings and related materials to help NMAH staff, interns, volunteers, and contractors use museum digital collections systems and processes.
-Provides help desk support for museum departments, including addressing questions, resolving issues, and initiating specialized or advanced tasks related to digital collections.
-Assists in developing and applying digital asset and data modelling professional standards and best practices to ensure the effective discovery, use, and long-term stewardship of museum collections data.

Specialized Experience: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service or comparable pay band system related to the work of this position. Specialized experience is defined as: using digital collections systems, such as collections information systems and digital asset management systems, to manipulate and migrate collections data in support of collections management processes in a museum, archive or cultural institution; developing processes and training staff in the use of digital collections systems; and providing help desk support to staff to address questions and resolve issues with collections information or media.
OR
Education: completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, if related to the position. Related degrees may include Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, and Museum Studies, and Digital Humanities, provided they are supported by coursework in digital content management (for example digital archives, digital preservation, digital curation, digital asset management, museum informatics, or data management).

A combination of graduate level education and specialized experience as described above.

-Knowledge of digital collections applications, (such as Axiell Mimsy XG, Crystal Reports, Open Refine), and/or query languages sufficient to administer and/or monitor the program requirements.
-Skill in working with client-server, or relational databases, sufficient to manage data collation and preparations.
-Knowledge of client-server, object-oriented and relational databases and applications, web development applications, or web-database applications sufficient to analyze, interpret, and translate user needs into systems requirements.
-Skill in customer service support sufficient to assist and support user and/or business requirements.
-Knowledge of data management and standardization concepts, principles, and methods.
-Knowledge of current digital media formats and encoding standards, digital imaging technologies, or digital asset management systems sufficient to assist NMAH digitization efforts.
Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above. Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied.
