Duties
This position supervises the day to day operations for the Buildings and Grounds Branch. Incumbent performs journeyman level work in the maintenance trades such as Carpentry, Plumbing, Electrical, Roofing, Masonry, Painting, Custodial and Grounds.
Supervisory duties include:
- Planning current/future budgets, estimating costs, developing budget requests, determining staffing, equipment, materials and facility needs; scheduling work and leave.
- Provides work direction to motivate subordinates to work together as an effective unit; provides guidance in a variety of trades; assures equipment and materials are available for projects; defines standards of quality, quantity of work, and health and safety precautions expected; inspects work to ensure these standards are met.
- Prioritization, planning, coordination, assigning, and the leading of multiple assignments with crews in multiple building trades including carpentry, roofing, plumbing, electrical, masonry, painting and other related trades. Leads by demonstrating proper work methods and on occasion have trained others in performance of these assignments.
- Inspect work to ensure that it meets applicable codes, standards and regulations including those related to safety.

You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
- You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
- If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
- You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 1-2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
Qualifications
Ability to do the work of a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor WS 9 without more than normal supervision (screen out). Work history demonstrates journeyman level knowledge and leadership of tradesman, in the planning, layout, construction, maintenance, and repair in at least one of the following trades: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, masonry, painting, and roofing. Work history demonstrates skilled worker level knowledge of the trades listed above and experience with routine building and grounds maintenance and repair activities (i.e., locksmithing, appliance repair, custodial and janitorial care, furniture repair, etc.).
Abilty to Supervise: Work history demonstrates leader level duties or performed as an acting supervisor of a maintenance crew providing leadership, prioritization, planning, coordination, assigning, and the leading of multiple and guidance on multiple projects happening at the same time. Performed journeyman level work and lead or supervised work in at least 3 of the following trades: Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, Utility Operations, Water Treatment, Masonry, Welding, and/or Painting.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.
Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding.
