The practitioner will provide clinical direction and oversight to other members of the General Surgery team that is made up of Surgeons, Physician-Extenders, Residents and Medical Students. This physician will also provide oversight to the Pre-Op Center including LIP's providing these services. This physician will provide direct patient care in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions managed by General Surgeons. The practitioner will examine patients in the inpatient and outpatient settings, make a diagnosis and develop and implement a treatment plan that may include a recommended surgical procedure. The practitioner will follow the patient through the continuum of care from initial consult to discharge from the General Surgery Service. The Chief, General Surgery Service will work directly with the Director and Deputy Director, Surgical Care in the VA to recommend, develop, implement and evaluate goals, objectives, policies and procedures related to the operations and functions of the General Surgery Service. The Chief will be responsible for establishing a call schedule and be ultimately responsible for patients under the care of General Surgery. The Chief will ensure consult triage and clinic access meet standards established by the Group Practice Manager, National Surgery Office, and VHA. The Chief will maintain accountability for performance, behavior, and training for all members in the Section, including on-time completion of annual performance evaluations. All other duties as assigned, pertaining to this occupation, to meet the needs of the Agency, Department, Facility, and/or Service.
Work Schedule: Typically Monday thru Friday, hours will be flexible depending upon patient demand; Additionally, there is an on call schedule that will require work to be completed during off hours, weekends, and holidays.
