The North Rim District supervisory park ranger position is responsible for providing first-level supervision to a staff of permanent and seasonal law enforcement rangers engaged in a community-based, inclusive, and challenging resource-based protection ranger operation. You will manage schedules, approve leave and training, review and approve incident reports, complete performance appraisals, and handle performance and conduct issues in accordance with policy. As a field supervisor you will also perform the full-range of law enforcement duties as a Type 1 LEO.
The North Rim District encompasses all areas above the rim on the north side of the Grand Canyon and areas near to or adjacent to the Tuweep Area in the western Grand Canyon. It is a diverse and vast area with a heavily visited frontcountry and a vast backcountry. In addition to law enforcement duties, the North Rim has an active ALS emergency services operation, a growing structural fire program, all-hazard SAR operations, a field-based foot and e-bike based backcountry patrol program, complex winter operations, and a collaborative bison removal program.
The supervisor position is responsible for scheduling and planning all types of front and backcountry patrols and a complicated suite of emergency responses. The position provides input for the development of short and long range plans, and works toward meeting district and division objectives.
The incumbent will also work closely with the Science and Management Division to accomplish resource management objectives related to obtaining a sustainable population of bison on the North Rim.
As a Supervisory Park Ranger you will lead daily operations and direct the completion of collateral duties related to training and leadership. You will conduct and supervise the detection of criminal activity, investigation of criminal violations, and custodial arrests. You may prepare and execute warrants, interview witnesses, and detain suspects. You will ensure the completion of comprehensive written reports. You will conduct and/or supervise gathering of law enforcement, security, and intelligence information relating to the park, its facilities, events, mission, or visitors.
You will set work goals and ensure all employees receive required training in a timely manner; identify operational requirements and make recommendations to your supervisor regarding programming, budgeting, training, administration, and evaluation of operations; and schedule patrols to maximize visitor contact with special consideration to problem areas. You will supervise and lead complex law enforcement, all hazard, emergency medical, and search and rescue operations as well as provide emergency medical services to park visitors and residents. In addition, you will participate in all aspects of employee supervision including performance planning and appraisals, employee recognition, and employee counseling.
This is a secondary-administrative law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U. S. C. 8412 (d) (FERS). PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet qualification requirements, but may not be eligible for special retirement coverage. If such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under CSRS, an employee must transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position. Law Enforcement Commission: This position requires applicants to possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to possess by 09/08/2021 a valid Type I or higher level National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission (or equivalent).

Physical Conditions: This work regularly includes long periods of standing, hiking and/or climbing, in many cases on uneven, steep, rough, slippery, and/or rugged terrain. Strenuous exertion is frequently required in law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, medical and related emergency activities. Lifting or carrying equipment weighing over 50 pounds such as firefighting or search and rescue equipment is required. In some assignments, heavy packs may have to be carried long distances over mountainous, desert, or snow-covered terrain.
Duties involve performing physically rigorous assignments, oftentimes in isolated outdoor environments, frequently while exposed to severe weather conditions. Dangerous persons must be physically confronted, subdued, and apprehended many of whom are known to carry weapons. Prisoners must be kept under physical restraint during transport and processing. The North Rim District is situated on the rim of the Grand Canyon amidst the vast public lands of the Arizona Strip. It is about 20 miles from the South Rim by a strenuous hike through the Grand Canyon or a 215 mile drive which takes approximately 4 hours. The nearest community with full range of services is located in Kanab, UT approximately 80 miles from the North Rim. The elevation on the North Rim is about 8,200 feet and consequently the climate in the summer is mild with highs in the 80's and lows in the 50's. Between May 15 and October 15 the North Rim receives approximately 500,000 visitors. The North Rim has a robust concession operation which features a historic full service lodge with accommodations serving around 500 visitors, 230 concession employees, a general store, post office, mule ride concession, gas station, campground, etc. Beyond the North Rim Village the district has about 20 miles of paved scenic roads, 80 miles of high clearance 4 wheel drive roads, and hundreds of miles of trails/routes including immediate access to the North Kaibab Trail/cross-canyon corridor. Recreational opportunities include hiking, running, climbing, canyoneering, rafting, road/mountain biking, skiing, hunting, fishing and numerous other options in nearby communities such as St. George, Utah and Page, Arizona. Employees are assigned quarters in a cabin, apartment, or house.
