The incumbent will serve as a Terrestrial Wildlife Biologist under the direction of the Chief of Wildlife and Physical Sciences of the Resources Management and Science Division in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The incumbent will serve as an advisor on the development and implementation of a science-based ecological management program for terrestrial wildlife. Duties of the position will focus on using scientifically sound expertise in wildlife biology and ecology in order to understand the impacts of human interactions, climate change, and other internal/external threats to park terrestrial wildlife and habitat and to design and implement appropriate management actions to mitigate these threats. Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing. walking, climbing and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Some activities will occur in physically dangerous areas or settings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks present a uniquely challenging work environment. These parks represent an extraordinary continuum of ecosystems (93% designated wilderness) arrayed along the greatest vertical relief (1,370 to 14,495 feet elevation) of any protected area in the lower 48 states. They are the highest, most rugged portion of the High Sierra Mountains. As such, this position requires experience utilizing wilderness travel skills. Selectee must be able to hike by foot in the backcountry at high altitude (elevations above 10,000 feet) for extended periods of time while carrying backpacks, tools and supplies of at least 50 lbs, and be able to camp for several days at a time.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, caves, firelines, wetlands, forests and alpine environments. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster. This position is subject to both pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received.
Housing information: Government housing (some accessible to persons with disabilities) within the park MAY be available on a limited/bid basis, and assigned based on management needs.
Air Quality: Poor air quality afflicts Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially during summer months - generally May to October. High ozone levels may be the most harmful pollutant here.
