As a/an Senior Underwriter, you will:
- Assist the Chief with oversight responsible for the technical direction of the Branch. This position combines the basic duties of a Construction Analyst, Appraiser and Mortgage Loan Specialist as it relates to Single Family Mortgage Insurance underwriting. The combination of duties enhances the HUD technical staff to a level of difficulty that is higher than the equivalent private sector Mortgage underwriter to effectively monitor and perform reviews of Direct Endorsement Lenders and Underwriters. The Senior Underwriter is also responsible for performing as a Department representative and facilitator for this area of expertise.
- Assist the Branch Chief in monitoring the status of goal accomplishment. Advise the Chief of potential problems in attainment of goals and objectives. Research required underwriting procedures and techniques, requiring comprehensive knowledge of Direct Endorsement rules, regulations, and procedures. Serve as an expert-level resource on matters relating to Underwriting and other Direct Endorsement issues.
- Responsible for analyzing the risk inherent in the issuance of mortgage insurance on mortgages for one-to-four family loans to determine if a property is an acceptable risk, and to determine the credit eligibility of the mortgagors and to assure compliance with statutory, regulatory and administrative requirements, the key area of this responsibility is in evaluating the operation(s) of the Direct Endorsement and/or contractor performed underwriting program(s). This review is to determine problems with specific underwriters, appraisers, builders, or lenders so action can be taken to correct, or minimize the losses associated with the identified problems.

Key Requirements:You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized experience for the GS-13 is defined as one year of experience at the GS-12 level, or equivalent, that is directly related to the position and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience for this position must include:
Overseeing projects that require coordinating and integrating the work of others and providing progress reports to management or high-level officials; AND
Underwriting single-family residential properties; AND
Performing trend analysis, reporting findings and writing recommendations to management officials; AND
Implementing and evaluating programs areas and providing recommendations for improvements.
Experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis.
