This position is located at the University of Missouri, Columbia, host institution for the Great Rivers Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (GR-CESU) though reports to the NPS Regional Office in Omaha, NE, to enable more effective interaction and collaboration with the Regional Management Team for Interior Regions 3, 4 and 5. The position is supervised by the Associate Regional Director for Natural Resources Stewardship and Science. The GR-CESU was established to facilitate the delivery of professional science through the CESU Host University and partner universities for the member federal agencies including the National Park Service.
The purpose of the NPS CESU Research Coordinator is to: (1) develop and implement an integrated program of natural, social and cultural resource research that supports NPS Interior Regions 3, 4 and 5 park units; (2) serve as liaison with the USGS and other federal agencies; (3) develop partnerships and secure outside sources of support from Federal, State, academic and private organizations in conducting cooperative research efforts; (4) and as a permanent member of the national network of CESUs, provide the National Park Service with technical leadership as a science advisor in providing an integrated and responsive research program at the regional and service-wide levels.
The Research Coordinator assists in the identification of research needs in NPS units, secures funding and other resources to support and expand the program, directs administrative activities, and facilitates resource management activities in cooperation with superintendents and regional resource specialists. Works with superintendents, park resource managers and regional resource specialists to facilitate the development of park research priorities and programs. Serves as the NPS representative in setting overall CESU research priorities. The Research Coordinator solicits reviews and assists parks in writing research proposals, seeks cooperative researchers, monitors contracts, review research scientists' work plans, monitors their progress and evaluates their performance. Serves as a science advisor as well as resource and research link to other science advisors throughout Interior Regions 3, 4 and 5.
Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
