Identifies research needs, prepares requests for proposals or statements of work, and provides oversight for research projects. Serves as Contracting Officer's Technical Representative / Agreements Technical Representative for projects conducted through contracts, interagency agreements, and cooperative agreements. Evaluates research results for management implications.
Coordinates the park's vegetation management strategies and programs with those on adjacent lands for the purposes of achieving broad ecosystem protection strategies and preventing human impacts.
Applies chemical treatment ( Herbicides ) in vegetation management as part of ecosystem restoration projects.
Maintains Pesticide Treatment Logs.
In cooperation with appropriate staff, researchers, and partners, the botanist designs, develops, tests, and implements protocols to identify, evaluate, and do long-term monitoring of flora. This includes conducting inventories to determine statistically valid plot distributions and design. Writes new monitoring documents that define monitoring techniques and develops methods for future refinements of protocols.
Prepares management and scientific reports regarding the results of protection, mitigation, restoration, inventory, monitoring, and research activities. Summarizes new and conventional information for use by scientists, managers, park staff, cooperators, and partners
Complete botanical surveys and clearances to assist with the processing of permit and or projects to ensure compliance with appropriate federal law.
Implement the habitat improvement and restoration projects for the park.
Monitors and surveys sensitive species and their habitats.
Document, evaluate, and report changes in habitat status
Serves on an interdisciplinary team to address botanical and natural resources issues and problems.
Collaborate with supervisor and other specialists to write and review botanical input for environmental assessments, biological assessments, protective stipulations, and resource management plans.

Big Bend National Park encompasses 801,000 acres of Chihuahuan Desert with varied scenery and diversity of plant and animal life. The park community consists of 250 people, including employees of the NPS, Concession, Border Patrol, Postal Service, School, and their families living in 4 housing areas; Panther Junction (PJ), Chisos Basin, Castalon, and Rio Grande Village. A state-accredited elementary school (K-8) is located at Panther Junction. The park has a post office, gas stations, camper stores, restaurant, and lodge.
Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping, bicycling, and river rafting. An active employee/community association sponsors social events throughout the year.
Elevation in the park varies from 7825 to 1850 ft. The climate is generally pleasant with hot summers (90-110+ degrees F.) and mild winters (30-50 degrees F.).
Terlingua (a small town 24 miles away from PJ) has a state-accredited high school (no bus service), lodging, restaurants, hardware store, small grocery and gift stores, churches and a bank. Lajitas has limited shopping, lodging, restaurants, golf course and churches. Alpine, Texas (100 miles from PJ) has most necessities, including supermarkets, variety of stores, a hospital, pharmacies, churches, a movie theater, and a university. The nearest larger cities are Midland/Odessa (225 miles) and El Paso (325 miles).

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. To qualify for this position at the GS-11 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement.
