The U.S. Department of Commerce Office of the General Counsel is seeking one or two attorneys to join the Office of the Assistant General Counsel for Legislation and Regulation. The Office provides legal assistance in support of legislative and regulatory matters across the Department of Commerce. The open position(s) is located in the Legislative Division, which works with various bureaus to develop and support the Department’s legislative initiatives and is the focal point in the Department for coordinating the analysis of legislation and developing and articulating the views of the Department on pending legislation. This office is the principal legal liaison with the Office of Management and Budget, working to obtain required clearances and interagency consensus on Departmental letters, reports, testimonies, and legislative proposals for delivery to Congress.
Basic requirement for all grade levels:
Minimum Requirements:
For GS-11: Applicants applying at the GS-11 grade level may have less than one year of professional/legal experience. Exceptionally well qualified recent law graduates who are not yet members of the bar may be considered for a law clerk position at the GS-11 grade level which may be converted to an attorney position upon receipt of bar membership.
For GS-12: Applicants applying at the GS-12 grade level must have one year of legal or relevant experience.
For GS-13: Applicants applying at the GS-13 grade level must have two years of legal experience or relevant professional experience (legal or non-legal).
For GS-14: Applicants applying at the GS-14 grade level requires a minimum of three years of relevant legal experience.
All Grades: Hill experience is a plus but is not required.
Note: The General Counsel or designee retains the discretion to waive minimum qualifications as described above.
