Duties
The EPA OIG is seeking student trainees (legal) under the Pathways Program. This position is provided for current students with a desire to work in the public sector and assignments are designed to complement the students educational field while meeting the expressed needs of the agency and EPA OIG organizations.
You will gain valuable professional, administrative, and/or technical on-the-job training and experience with the opportunity to explore future career possibilities. You will perform support work in connection with the assignments and projects of the office to which you are assigned.
Ideal candidate for this internship is an individual pursing a law degree.
Candidates will be considered on the basis of the applicability of their education to specific EPA OIG assignments.
Positions are available in the following offices located in Washington, DC. We are only accepting the first 100 applicants. This vacancy will close after the applicant limit is reached.
Responsibilities
The ideal candidate will perform the following duties:
- Assists the Ethics and Administrative Attorney with administering the Ethics Program, to include but not limited to: Ethics Training, opinions, reports and financial reporting programs.
- Uses various legal software packages such as: WESTLAW, LEXIS, CMIS, etc. to assist the legal staff with legal researching. Independently completes required fact finding assignments by researching and retrieving legal cases, statutes, and regulations from the various software packages.
- Prepares legal documents in required format with guidance from attorneys, including the selection of proper format.
- Reviews Freedom of Information Act requests for information to determine which divisions and offices may be the custodian of the requested documents.
- The employee performs clerical support to ensure efficient office operations.

Qualifications
This is an appointment under the Pathways Program. Current students in advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. Appointee must sign a Participant Agreement. The entire duration of the Pathways Appointment constitutes a trial period.
To be eligible for an internship opportunity you must meet the following criteria:
- You must be a current student enrolled at least half time in:
- A qualifying educational institution pursuing a graduate or professional school
(e.g., law school, medical school), or a post-secondary home-school curriculum that has been
accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of
Education); or - A certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational
institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an
accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum; or - Students who take online courses are eligible to participate so long as all other requirements
are met and the school is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education.
- A qualifying educational institution pursuing a graduate or professional school
- You must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least a 2.0.
- You must be at least 16 years of age.

GS-7: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education.
NOTE: You MUST maintain status as a student for the duration of this program. If you are graduating in Spring 2020 and not pursuing additional education in Fall 2021, you are not eligible for this program.
