The Director, Battlespace Awareness and Security Programs (BASP), as delegated by the DDI(ISPR), exercises planning, policy and strategic oversight over capabilities associated with Defense Intelligence and Security. In order to fulfill this function, the incumbent makes recommendations for trade-offs within and among defense intelligence acquisition programs, systems integration standards and architectures, and operation methodology in order to achieve increased defense intelligence capability, efficiency and effectiveness; manages, plans, directs, and coordinates the activities of the BASP Directorate; provides management guidance and direction to the staff for portfolio matters related to intelligence and security including warning, reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence related activities, counterintelligence, security counter-measures, information dominance, information operations and information assurance, personnel and industrial, physical and classification security matters; and directs the development, coordination and oversight of the implementation of DoD policies and processes for management and acquisition of the above mentioned intelligence-related areas of responsibility. The Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security is the principal intelligence, counterintelligence and security advisor to the Secretary of Defense (SecDef), and the SecDef's principal representative to the Intelligence Community. The USDI&S exercises authority, direction, and control on behalf of the SecDef over the National Security Agency/Central Security Service, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the National Reconnaissance Office, and the Defense Security Service.
